A couple of new Nikon bodies are on the way in November.

The main thing on the D3 appears to be the (almost) full frame sensor at 23.9 mm x 36 mm. Too bad this didn't carry over to the new D300 though. The D300 does include several updates to the popular D200 such as improved LCD (640 x 480 resolution) and a new dust reduction methodology. The new Auto Focus (51 elements vs 11) seems potentially quite interesting.

Interesting to note that Nikon also is announcing 3 new telephoto lenses - 400mm, 500mm and 600mm. It seems this particular combo of bodies and lenses is squarely aimed at bringing Nikon back into the professional domain where Canon has successfully eroded Nikon's once noticible lead.
I wonder though if it's not too late for Nikon? I like Nikon; I'm currently using a D200 and will take a close look at the D300 when it arrives. But switching camera systems is so obviously pricey that it almost never happens. When Nikon stopped innovating with their digital offerings, professionals were almost forced to switch to Canon. Any professional event you go to these days is dominated by those big white Canon lenses. But by now, people have spent thousands on their Canons so why would they bother to switch back?
Nikon fans like me now have every reason to stay with the brand and new entrants have some great options to go with in either Nikon or Canon. But for existing pros I don't think we'll see a lot of switching going on.
