After speculation for the past few weeks, Nick Saban has left the head-coaching position at Miami to take the same post at the University of Alabama, ending his two-year tenure with the Dolphins.

A source said Saban failed to show for a scheduled morning meeting at team headquarters in Davie, Fla., with Dolphins owner H. Wayne Huizenga. However, Huizenga had met with Saban at the coach's house before Saban boarded a plane and left for Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Saban told Huizenga of his intentions via telephone and then informed all of his coaches by speakerphone that he was leaving to accept the Alabama position, the source said.

The deal with the Crimson Tide is reportedly for eight years and about $32 million. Saban just finished the second year of a five-year contract with the Dolphins.
Pretty lucrative deal he's getting from Alabama. You have to feel bad for the Dolphin fans. Everybody thought they would be a top contender this season; now they`re back where they started two years ago.

Good contract though -considering the life expectancy of a head coach these days.

But on the other hand -what will it take to get Millen out of Detroit.

Arizona Cardinals are interested in Pete Carrol. He would be an absolute fool to leave his gig at USC to go there. He has it made where he is. Makes good money, has full control over that football program, lives in sunny California, coaches a great football team who supposedly will be highly ranked again next year and this year's recruiting class (by USC) is supposedly the top in the country. Why would he want to leave for the NFL where coaches go to fired. The guy is having so much fun at USC. Look at him on the sidelines, always laughing, smiling, having a great time. I heard he sometimes covers kicks in practice just for fun.

As a college head coach Saban can run the show completely. He can pick the players he wants, enforce order and discipline as he sees fit and not have prima donna player (who make more than him) dictate the direction of the teams offense or defense. All in all -a coach, in the end of his career will be judged by wins and losses; college or pro. Nobody will ever say something like, The Bear wasn't a good coach because he only coached in the collegiate level.

I guess Saban just got tired of losing. Plus Miami doesn't look like they've gotten any better the past five seasons.

I didnt know they were interested in Carroll, I do know they are interviewingDa BEARS defensive coordinator "chico" Ron Rivera tomorrow. and then he is off to interview for the Falcons job to.I cant believe the Bears have given permission to talk to him since their season isnt over yet, the same thing happened last year with him. He needs to stay in Chicago and get his defense ready for the next game. It has looked terrible for the last month.

There should be no out clauses in contracts. a contract is a contract, it really pisses me off. When you change your mind half way through your contract. I know its college but that should be tampering. There should be an agreement between college and the pros that you can't touch each other. also I know how dumb this sounds

Saban has no class...

..just another nomadic coach who is never satisfied, much in the mold of the NBA's Larry Brown..without the winning tradition

Gotta love the guts that Saban showed resigning from the Dolphins...he made a phone call to the owner Wayne Huizinga, then made a conferenc call to his assistant coaches to let them know. Real class, what a gutless wimp of a man. Not a shining example of how to leave an organization..

Don Shula wasn't too impressed with how Saban departed. Heard an interview with him (Shula) today and he pretty much crushed Saban.

Saban is a slimey slimey man.

Honestly, how long can he keep this lying up. He lied to everyone including recruits and their families when at LSU saying he's had plenty of NFL offers and is not going to leave LSU then just after leaves for Miami. Now he tells anybody who will listen that he's staying at Miami and even gets angry when people say he's leaving (he was furious with Peter King).

How would you feel as a recruit, when Saban comes to you and says, 'hey son, come to Bama, you will be a starter, I promise'. The guy is a known liar now, who is going to believe him. I think he is much better suited to the college game than the NFL game but come on man, you have a history of being non-commital (LSU, Michigan State, Miami).

Dolphins owner gave Saban everything he wanted. He had 21, yes 21 assistant coaches for the Dolphins this year. They build him an indoor practice facility, and gave him all the personnel control for the franchise. He said he was there to build a winner. He quit on them because he knew he couldn't do it.

15 and 17 in 2 years. Don't think so.
That was what Don Shula said in the Miami Herald today. He said it doesn't look like they miss him, he was 15-17 and that's not very good.

Saban is a NFL loser. He did nothing in Miami and he's a straight up liar. He 3 times that he was committed to the Dolphins. I wouldn't want my kid to play for him. He could leave at any time.

Could Cowler be the next head coach of Miami?
I can't see Cowher resigning just to immediately bolt to another team. He's pretty tight with Rooney. If he quits he'll likely just relax for a year or two.

Cowher isn't going anywhere. I could be wrong but since the Rooney tenure in Pittsburgh, they've only ever had what....four head coaches? That's not a good comparison or point. Pittsburgh isn't Miami and the ownership / coach relation isn't anywhere near the same. Miami hired a gunslinger -they knew this and they shouldn't be surprised he bolted when they couldn't win.

I hear ya. But Cowher does only have one year on his contract. And he's not going to get the kind of money from Pittsburgh that he could get from Miami. Just the fact that Pittsburgh is not offereing a contract extension makes you think. Plus the Dolphins already have two coordinators who have worked for Cowher in the past.

I don't think it will happen, but it's possible.
