The teacher was the fall guy. Hung out by the school and school board who were ultimately responsible for letting this child go on the trip after failing a swim test.
Tragic accident. I hope the parents sue the school board.

What I don't understand is this, the boy was not a strong swimmer, so why not wear a life jacket - weather you are a strong swimmer or not, children should be wearing a life jacket on trips like these wear the school board is liable.

Certain ethnic groups simply don't know how to swim and don't know the risks in water. Nine Summers ago a man in water was in distress, his brother dove in to try to save him. Both brothers drowned. So sad.

(I grew up in rural Quebec and we learned to swim at around the same time we learned how to walk and skate.)

From the press reports he admitted in trial to having ignored the requirements of the school board. Seems like reasonable grounds for dismissal (though as I said, they do have a strong union). IMO he should be happy enough that he's been paid these past few years for sitting at home.

I wonder how much the parents were aware. I'm sure plenty of kids have lied to their parents or had them sign a form without reading. Doesn't absolve the parents though.

Yes, but we don't name them because it would be "inappropriate".

The two brothers who drowned were from one of those countries.
