How long can a team take before calling a challenge?

The reason why I'm asking is that Indianapolis challenged the catch by a Denver receiver (Lelie) during the first half of today's game. They waited quite some time before making the challenge.

I think they made the challenge only after seeing instant replays of the catch/drop. Is that fair? Doesn't that defeat the entire purpose of the challenge? Wouldn't home teams use this to their advantage?

Which is why some teams who have benefitted from questionable calls try to get off a play in 15 or 20 seconds rather than the allotted 40.

In my view 40 seconds is way too much time between plays. Iwould see it at 30 seconds ... 35 max. Let's play ball and not stand around.

I think Dunga (Indy) had the opportunity to see a video replay of the catch. That's why he called the challenge. None of the commentators in the broadcast even brought up the issue untill the challenge was called.

This favours the home team. Show replays that could favour the home team. Don't show replays that could hurt the home team.

No kidding. The rules regarding the clock are actually one of the things that the CFL has over the NFL - my God, NFL games take a long time to play.

You have untill the ball is snapped (the next play to challenge)

Yes that was a bad call by the refs if anything should have gone down as a fumble and then revored by lelie

Vikings vs Eagles

Eagles receiver drops ball as he hits the turf near the sidelines. Viking player recovers. However, Viking player had stepped out of bounds and only had one foot in bounds when he picked up the ball.

Ruling: Viking player had not re-established himself in bounds. So, fumble out of bounds, Eagles ball.

I still think many of the challenges are due to instant replay or information that is relayed to the teams.

INSTANT REPLAY SUCKS

I cannot believe that the NFL has not reduced the clock to 30 or 35 seconds.

Instant replay has gotten too out of hand.... I am waiting on the ruling on whether a blade of grass is technically part of the ground. So therefore, if the ball touches a blade of grass then....

It's gotten so technical that it really takes away from a great game played by people and refereed by people not machines
