Magnus Carlsen will step down, and does not want to defend his title against Ian Neponmiatchi, the Russian Granddmaster who earned the right to challenge him, citing that he has nothing more to gain from playing.

Magnus Carlsen is widely considered the best chess player ever.

The championship will be played by the Chinese Grandmaster Ding Liren and the Russian Ian Neponmiatchi.
