How could the town of Newmarket get away with such a racist and classist policy that singled out Asian businesses and threw an entire sector of low-income Asian women out of work during a pandemic?

In Newmarket, Asian massage workers have been engaged in a battle with the town council, which is intent on shutting down their businesses by claiming that the workers are both disreputable criminals and sex trafficking victims.

Most of these Asian girls at massage parlours across North America barely speak English or not at all. A holder of Hong Kong passport does not need a visa to enter Canada. They can come in and stay for 6 months and renew for another 6 months. This is the conduit used by the human traffickers. The so-called low-income Asian women are not Canadian citizens or landed immigrants (or US citizens). Most are being trafficked by criminals. And if you go on leolist, you will find several of these girls being advertised for unsafe sex by their traffickers. Sad.

Bravo to Newmarket. Bravo.
