New plastic $50 bill, now at an ATM near you

QUEBEC — Canada's currency overhaul has entered a new phase today.

A new plastic $50 bill has become the first polymer note available through bank machines.

It is being released several months after the new plastic $100 bill, and is part of a broader upgrade of Canadian paper currency.

The new $50 bill, just like the old one, is red and features former prime minister Mackenzie King on the front.

But this one also features the icebreaker, the CCGS Amundsen; it's partly transparent, and it contains hard-to-counterfeit holographic features.

In presenting the new bill today in Quebec City, Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney calls it state-of-the-art technology that will give Canadians confidence in the integrity of their currency.

I find the new bills tend to stick together. I'm pretty sure that I accidentally handed a cashier $200 instead of $100. Didn't notice until later though...

I saw Jessica in January. I paid her with 2 new $100's and a new $50. I paid Nikki in Durham with a few and she hasn't worked since January and I paid Kristen (Durham) with new $50's last month. I've also been using them at Muse for a while now. I know this because I got a bonus cheque in January and only use that money to hobby with..

I quite like them. I know they stick together, and I don't think that they have a plastic feel - but rather a smooth texture. Just last week, I handed a $5-bill over to get coffee at a local shop, and the clerk told me the bill was counterfeit. I asked him how he knew, and he said that the silver band was missing from the bill and there was no see-through watermark. I kicked myself for missing the silver band down the side of the bill. First time I knowingly had a counterfeit bill. I think the new ones will help prevent counterfeit currency.

Maybe once they are worn in they will be better. A stack of brand new paper bills would often stick together too.
I've used the Australian money and I've not met an Australian who didn't love it so I'm sure in time we'll all love it too.
