New JOB offer! Stuck between a rock and a hard place! What would YOU do?

I have a difficult descion to make and I wanted to know if anyone else has ever been in the same predicament? I have to make a decsion actually as early as tomorrow! I have been offered a job about 45 minutes by car from where I live and currently I have a job that is about 5 minutes from where I live. However, the current situation I’m in is NOT fulltime and is on a contract based term. So, with a contract comes NO benefits and no job security basically and you can be out the door whenever the company feels like it! The new job offer is fulltime with a great company! Both jobs pay the same but this new job offer includes benefits, paid vacations etc…

What would someone here do in this case? Take the new job offer or stick it out with the current job and hope for fulltime down the road?

All feedback is appreciated!

Guess it all depends on the market you are in and how confident you are of ongoing work. I used to be an IT contractor, paid really well, but you always were in marketing mode looking for the next gig. When a perm offer came along (in my case 15 minutes from home) I jumped at it.That was 2 years back and I am still with the company and enjoying it. Can't say I don't miss the money I used to make contracting, and the tax benefits that go with it, but in my case I have gone from 80% travel to once every couple of months.

Guess that doesn't really help you though? The other thing to consider of course is that no job is really permament any more.

In saying all that, having paid vacation is great

As swerve said, the only job security in this labour market lies in your ability to find other work.

As for your choice, choose the one which will make you happiest. Lifes too short to be working JUST for a pay cheque!

Clearly the benefits offered in a salaried position are attractive, but so are the benefits of self-contracting. The downside of salary is that it is often difficult to take other "contracts". There is also the risk that the salary position will actually turn out to be a contract, in that as soon as you have accomplished their needs, you could be downsized without the benefit of having maintained a self marketing regime. In my mind... build out your own business, not someone elses. Best of Luck

Take the perm job with the commute and the benefits. dont think about it. Dont pass it up. Dont look back. You would be foolish not to. There has been a resurgence in private corporations offering bonafide full time positions. It wont last forever. There is a lot to be said for full time work and benefits. Good luck.

I would love to have that girl in your sig line to box the living day lights out of me ... punch me in the nose and kick me in my nuts and then spit in my face ...

Can I get a job with her? :p

As for your situation, take the full time one for sure. Everyone commutes these days. Where I work, no one lives in the area. One of them lives as far as Missisauga ... what's the big deal? Enjoy the eye candy on the way to work ...

Is the drive 45 minutes because of distance or because of traffic?

I live in the east end of Toronto and have had jobs in Mississauga and Brampton which were some 35-50 km away but only took 45-60 minutes to get to because of Hwy 401 rush hour traffic. My actual gripe wasn't so much with the time it took to get to/from work, but rather the need to have a car and the wear and tear put on it daily.

ok, simple answer here. You are offered a full time job with all the benefits , but the same money and further distance away with a great company...as opposed to contract money and closer distance...answer...contract money
is always better...why..because as an independant you can write off some
of your everyday expenses to business, whereas in a full time position
depending on your salary you are taxed approx. 50% of your salary which means you actually take home 50% of what you would if you were on contract..now suppose you pay 20% taxes as a contractor..then your actual
net salary as a contractor is approx. 30% more than full time..security today
in any job is non-existant so taking that into account is a mistake. now does the wear and tear on your car balance the benefits...prob. not but for an extra 30% salary I think I'd have to stick with the contract...just my 2 cents...

what to do

I would go to my current employer and let them know I have another job offer I am considering only because it would be permanent. who knows they may just offer you a full time posision. If not then take the other for security but wait 6 months to move. Just my 2 cents, Maryln
