I bought a VW Toureg and someone backed into me and did a real number on my rear quarter panel and bumper.
Basically i was T boned by a car backing up.
My insurance company rented me a 2005 Hyundai Elantra VE.
My problem is i like it what do i do........it is cheap enough to buy and keep my SUV...... or do i sell the VW and start hugging trees and enjoying the savings in gas.
The Hyundai is a really really nice handling car and is fairly roomy and nice looking...... it is just..ummmmm....errrrr..... it is a Hyundai.

Going to have to ask yourself. What is it that brought to decide on the VW?

Once you know the why you will lnow the clearer choice.

Did you actually test drive both vehicles ??
I have, the Cayene S is a superior vehicle compared to the Toureg....IMHO

If you just look at the stats from some web site, sure they look similar, but the real test is when your ass is in the drivers seat.

I don't own either, but I do own a "re-badged" vehicle.

Comparing the Toureg and a Cayenne is like the ES330 to a Camry V6, Nissan Sentra to a Infiniti G20, Acura EL to a Honda Civic, Chevy SUT to the Cadillac SUT, Pacifica/300 C to a Benz, Subaru WRX wagon to a Saab 9-2x etc. etc.

Though built on the same platform with similar stats, it don't mean they are the same car.

LOL gas is an issue... but when i took the Cayene out for the weekend i was not as impressed as i was with the Toureg for comfort of the ride ...IMHO .. plus with the Toureg i was less freaked about my kids climbing all over the place ...... but in all honesty i preferred the feel of the Toureg.
DFC let me try both for one weekend each.
But i am really overwhelmed but the feel of this Hyundai when i am behind the wheel. Hard to explain but the cost to performance is really getting me thinking...i am actually just thinking of having a car to drive in town and around the city and it feels nice is cheap and if someone scratches bumps it or pisses on it i want lose my mind.. Maybe i found the Toureg most appealing due to the fact my last SUV was a Landcruiser....

Hyundai has come a long way from the disaster that was the Pony in the 80's. The problem is that they still have a perception problem. I have a friend who has a Sonata and claims it is the best value he has ever seen in a car.

Depends on how important image is to you. If you could care a less about what people think about what car you drive I say go for the one that presents the best value in your opinion.

If however it is important for you to impress the neighbourhood with what you have parked in the garage the Hyundai will most likely not cut it.

In regards to the Porsche/VW debate, although the Toureg is an amazing vehicle, as Ferris Bueller once said "if you have the means I highly recommend it" if the money is not an issue, the Porsche would be my choice. Of course as long as we are living in the land of make believe right now, make it a Turbo rather than an S!! :)

hey canucklehead... i know where you are coming from - perhaps the most fun i had was driving a 1980 honda civic!

forget the hyundai... try and find a vehicle that offers the best of both worlds - small and sporty, but with 4wd and a little extra room in back when you need it...

add these together, you get the subaru impreza. you can get the impreza outback - it has more than adequate power and looks cool, or you can even splurge and go for the wrx with amazing performance... if you want there is also the saab 9-2, which is the exact same car, but with nicer looks and finsishes.

why don't you spend a day hitting a few dealers and test drive these cars:

mazda 3 sport (much better than any hyundai)
acura rsx
honda civic sir
vw jetta v6 or turbo

Hyundai has made a believer out of me. Bought an XG350 a couple of months ago and it has been great.

One benefit with my job is a company car of my choice. Over the years, I’ve leased a variety of expensive European wheels and still drive one of those to and from work. My second car (which sadly is out of my own bank account), though, has always been the more economical North American makes. But after two consecutive NA lemons that turned temperamental almost instantly upon the expiry of warranty (and a number of suspects prior to them), I decided to go for an import this time around.

In fact, my last NA car (which I’ve ridden in favor of the Hyundai) was a major embarrassment to me – in front of a MP, of all places. I made the mistake of driving it to visit a MP at EBC on a Sunday night. After the session, I went back to the car and accidentally tripped the alarm. The thing went crazy, locked up the ignition and kept honking non-stop for a good 20 minutes until the battery died. I didn’t have the cell phone with me so had to go back to the MP for help. Worst still, it was Sunday night and most garages were closed. In the meantime, a crowd was assembled around the thing wondering who that idiot was making a scene outside of a “health parlor. Finally and after an hour’s wait, a toll-truck showed up. It boosted the battery, only to find that the damn alarm went off again …., in the middle of an EBC mall with many MP’s. I ended up going home on the truck with the damn thing tolled while honking all the way home. Men, it was embarrassing, leave alone the explaining I had to do to my family!!!

Coming back to Hyundai. After much research, I decided to give the Sonata a test drive. It was great. But the minute I got into the roomier XG350, I knew this was it. This car, being the top-of-the-line Hyundai despite a price tag at LESS THAN HALF of my company car, rides just as well, handles almost as good, comes with almost as many gimmicks – and is considerably roomier at the back. Other than the look, which some may find conservative, this vehicle has tighter finishes than the over-price European brand I’m driving (it rattles slightly over bumps). This Hyundai is so far flawless and is such a fun to drive that I’ve been riding it in every opportunity, including to and from MP’s - with confidence. While it is too early to gauge its reliability, the first impression is impressive. And the 5-year, 100,000 km, bumper- to-bumper warranty and the 7-year power train warranty add credibility.

Hyundai does have a perception problem, as rsalomon rightly pointed out. It is not the vehicle to show for what you can afford, but is indeed a great vehicle to show for what you choose to drive.

i still have a problem with korean cars... if you look at "consimer reports" and j d power etc., you will find that the koreans still lag the japanese and many other makes in terms of reliability.

the other thing is that german cars have gone down in reliability over the last few years. ,ercedes attributes part of this to the fact that their cars have had too many gadgets with with electroinics, but i doubt that is the entire reason.

so, my advice is stay aaway from german cars, and korean cars, and go with a japanese car (or one like the saab 9-2 or pontiac vibe - cars which are essentially japanese built but are sold under other names).

Forget about buying a Hyundai. Customer service blows.
My clutch on my Accent went at 58,000 km, 2,000 km under mileage warranty but 2 months over time warranty. Dealer referred me to corporate customer service helpline where 'Richard' bascially laughed at me when I suggested that company meet me halfway on the $1,200 cost to repair the clutch.
I told him my lease is up in 5 months and that I will never purchase Hyundai again ...

I parked my buddies Honda Element today and OMG easy to park for such a small roomie vehicle.
