New Car Purchasing Question?

Hello!

Just wondering if someone has some inside information for me regarding purchasing a new car? For example, suppose I go to my local (say Honda) dealer and discuss a sale, including trade in and general negotiations and settle on a number. If I go to the next closest Honda dealer, will they have access to the figures from my first dealer? Quite honestly, I detest dealing with car sales people (nothing personal, I know you have a job to do) . Since the price of new cars is on their websites, I figure it's only the trade in and extras that are negotiable.
Thanks

Each dealership will negotiate differently depending upon what their sales volumes are looking like. I always try to buy a vehicle in the down periods before a month or year end. Best deals to be had.

What do you mean by "settle on a number"? I think they could possible know if a previous financing application was already sent. (not 100% sure on this though)

Other than that, I don't think they'd even give a shit.

Do your search by going to different dealerships and look at what they have and just say you're looking to buy. Don't even negotiate immediately but wait a day or 2 before going back - after you've done your dealership evaluations. And only then negotiate. Often it's an advantage to wait until dealerships have their annual sales usually just before the new models arrive, generally late summer. And tell the car salesperson, especially if they always say "I'll have to check with the sales manager", that you're leaving. That really throws them off. Have fun, even though buying a car is a PIA.

Once you know which car you want, use a non profit service like Car Help Canada or the APA. They will get you a good price and you can avoid the negotiating hassle.

You can negotiate on the phone with different dealerships, I've done it many times. Best thing about this is they know you're phoning around so they give you their best price.
