WATERLOO—Two new BlackBerries being showcased on Jan. 30 “are just the beginning” of the transformation of pioneering smartphone maker Research In Motion Ltd., chief operating officer Kristian Tear said Wednesday.
RIM’s portfolio of mobile computing offerings based on the QNX operating system will expand “as time goes by,” said Tear, whose position was created by chief executive Thorsten Heins after he took the helm at the start of the year. Tear said the initial devices, one with a touch screen and the other maintaining RIM’s popular physical keyboard, but with enhanced intuitive and multilingual capabilities, could be followed by other phones possibly with varying prices and features.
Tear said part of his role is to oversee a flawless launch of the new handsets, software and platform collectively known as BlackBerry 10 and to avoid the delays and missteps that have hampered RIM in the recent past. Analysts have also said RIM must avoid glitches, such as the problems with maps that marred the rollout of Apple Inc.’s latest iPhone.
Details including pricing and distribution arrangements among carriers will be unveiled in January and Tear said the new phone and software will be on store shelves soon after the Jan 30 event, and will be launched in countries around the globe simultaneously.
Tear acknowledged that a lot is riding on the phones and platform after RIM’s lack of new devices triggered a plunge in U.S. market share over the past two years, adding that he is confident RIM can be turned around.
He said local rollout dates are subject to carrier discretion, with more than 50 global carriers currently testing the devices for technical certification. Tear said RIM’s existing BB7 smartphones, leaders in developing markets including Indonesia and Nigeria, will remain in the company’s lineup for the foreseeable future.
The company on Wednesday also said it will offer free voice calling over a Wi-Fi network using the popular BBM messaging service, an update available for customer s using the BlackBerry 6 operating system or higher.
Tear said RIM takes a broad view of the potential of the new platform that Heins has said could support mobile computing applications in cars, appliances and industrial setting in addition to phones and tablets.
“We want to be the leader in mobile computing,” Tear said.
He said the two new phones, rumored to be codenamed London, offer unique and innovative features that set them apart from rival offerings such as the iPhone and Android handsets, adding that he believes the BB10 interface with its message hub and app multitasking using a flow and hide feature is the best in the business. BB10 will not require users to repeatedly switch between apps, but allow them to hide and reveal the programs with the flick of a thumb.
Tear also said that the BB10 will offer more apps than any other operating system has at launch.
The company has been criticized for a lack of apps compared to the iPhone and Samsung Android offerings but Tear, while not specifying numbers, said the problem has been solved “big time. We will have quality and quantity,” he added.
The COO said RIM is focused on its ground game in launching BB10, meeting with customers around the world and engaging social media to augment a marketing push to accompany the launch

Of course they are Canadian and I wish them well but I'm not sure if they really get it. It's hard when after leading the pack, you are looking for a seam so that you can slip between the big boys and get back into the race.

Who knows - if they succeed I might be Blackberry -> iPhone -> Android -> ...... Blackberry ??

I'm not so sure...
Who do you think they are going to take share from, what is their unique offering (what can a BB10 phone do that an Android or Apple phone cannot)

Bleh. Not very exciting at all. They are really just playing catch up. A lot of companies are moving away from RIM and going to Apple or BYOD; once moved - they will never come back.
I cringed when he gave the dude the high five LOL.

The work/personal feature is pretty cool, but besides that there is not much that i can see that would differentiate it from ios or android. Plus the timing of the release is just horrible, missing the Christmas season.

Plus the crowd is obviously a plant, the clap for every basic feature.

It's sad but this might be the end of RIM.

Looks promising. Wouldn't label RIM dead yet. If the new RIM phones have a low SAR (the old ones have really high SARs and would give me a headache when I use them) I would definitely give them some attention.

Here's a shot of the QWERTY keyboard of the BB 10, a revamped Bold?
http://dynamicmarketingpartners.com...-video-rim-wants-lady-gaga-to-help-sell-bb10/

I look forward to it, I do like a tactile keyboard myself, other times I like my Samsung Galaxy. This one will have touchscreen capability as well, which is nice to have along with the physical keybaord.
So developers need to support multiple screen sizes for their apps?

How many BB10 HW models will be released, does anyone know - is RIM making them all or are they allowing the OEMs (i.e. Samsung) into the party?

I saw the leaked photos of one of BlackBerry's new handsets. There is simple elegance to the design.

I've read (since this thread was started) additional positive comments about the message hub design.... at this point I think RIM's challenges are not technical or product related (most of the first look reviews have been positive and the design above is indeed elegant) but market issues... is there room for another smartphone ecosystem and can they draw apps developers and content providers.... a good example is Google, will Google build apps (like Maps) for BB10 - I don't know but given the decision they just made about Windows Phone (no plan to support) one has to wonder.

I heard the same thing and it makes sense. I heard that even with the boom ahead of us - the feeling is that there is only room for a third mobile O/S. Obviously you and I have our favorites but who fits into the third ? Windows 8 got a good drop on the Christmas market and I always thought the business O/S would have a strong pull but I heard the Windows 8 is not living up to expectations and a friend of mine who bought one is more than a little frustrated with it. Maybe there's a little daylight for our home boy to make an impact.

Remember me?

The hype behind my comeback was incredible too. I even won the best of CES 2009.

From what I have seen of all the OSs that are on the market for phones I have been most impressed with Windows 8. MS actually came up with their own ideas for the first time ever.

I have not had the pleasure of using it yet, but depending on how good the new BB10 is, I might get a Windows Phone as my next phone, so I'm curious to hear more specifically what your friend didn't like about it.

I don't know, unless M$ or RIM can fill a nitch that iOS or Android can't meet they may be toast....
