I just bought a new Laptop and in order for it to Work with Cable Modem, I have to provide the Company with what they call "Mac-address of the net work card" (PCMCIA-card).

The problem is, I don't have a clue what they are referring to, and did not add any card to my Laptop yet...I just plug the thing on the Ethernet Port....

How can I get them this number???

Many Thanks

Nic

the MAC addaress is the number assigned to you NETWORK INTERFACE CARD or NIC. The reason they seek this address is you might have requested a Static or permimnent IP address. For the most part this is unessary, unles you are a web server. If you switch to allowing a new IP address with each new login, this should become unecessary.

If you're using Windows XP, just go the command prompt (Start > Run > then type 'cmd')...at the prompt type 'getmac'

Or if you're using a different version of windows (works with XP too), go to the command prompt again, and type 'ipconfig /all', and the MAC address is listed as the 'Physical Address'

MAC addressing is used to authenticate your machine and often for filtering DHCP servers ( they are wide spread and inherently not secure). On my machines at work i use MAC addressing to filter permissions in the firewall and so that no computer can connect to our Network without being authorized by myself.
Rogers supposedly tracks your MAC address for you to be able to connect to their network. That is how they get people to pay for the second IP. Work around is a Linksys router with MAC address cloning available.
