Netbooks Dead by 2015

A year or so back, some people were still pushing netbooks over iPads (or a bit more common today...tablets). Well, the market has spoken and they are going to disappear by 2015.

The netbook is on life support and the industry is just about to pull the plug, according to a forecast by IHS iSuppli.

For 2013, netbook shipments are expected to fall to 3.97 million units, down 72 percent from 14.13 million in 2012. In 2010, netbook shipments hit a high of 32.14 million.

IHS iSuppli's bet is that the netbook will be extinct by 2015 as units drop to 264,000 in 2014 before going to zero.

It's obvious what happened---Apple's iPad.

no kidding. a terrible product with totally wrong resolution. i have one. the speed and functionality is ok except no web page fits properly. for most people the tablet is the king.

I bought my little acer netbook 2 years ago. Started with 1 gig, upgraded it to about 3.75 gig. Switched it to linux and it still works great. I use it solely for internet. Have it hooked up to my tv for the most part for live streaming. Take it on the road in case I need it and to check email etc.

Not bad for 250 bucks. And pretty much as fast as a tablet. Too bad really that this type of product is dying. A lot of us still like to have a tactile keyboard.

Plus multitasking can easily be done.
Put a SSD in that netbook and it will run circles around ANY and EVERY tablet!

It could be more a matter of economics/greed!
These companies may feel why make these mini laptops for 250 or less, when they can switch everyone to tablets costing twice as much or more, that do less.....:eyebrows:

Being an Apple salesman guess you would catch that I forgot to mention in the case of iPads, the cost can easily run TRIPLE what others are paying!.....:thumb:

This is a really dumb question, but is laptop basically netbook? I have a laptop as opposed to ipad and I'd never want to switch. Not a fan of the Ipad at all.

Yes... It's a smaller, less powerful version.

I use mine for casual web surfing and to live stream movies up to my tv. Also nice and small to take on the road if I need to google anything. A lot cheaper that a laptop but not as much capability. I got rid of the windows on mine and it still works great.

Yes a netbook is a smaller version laptop but performance wise a netbook will still runs circles around any underpowered but pricier iPad!.....
