As of January 2026, Canadian citizens entering Israel for short-term visits (up to 90 days) must comply with a new electronic authorization requirement that was implemented at the beginning of 2025.

Below are the essential requirements for entry:

1. Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA-IL)
Canadian citizens are visa-exempt for stays under 90 days, but you are now required to obtain an ETA-IL (Electronic Travel Authorization) before your trip.

  • Cost: 25 NIS (approximately $9–$10 CAD).

  • Validity: Valid for up to 2 years or until your passport expires. It allows for multiple entries.

  • Processing Time: It is recommended to apply at least 72 hours before booking your flight or hotel.

  • Official Site: Applications must be submitted through the official Israel Population and Immigration Authority portal.
2. Passport Validity
Your Canadian passport must be valid for at least 6 months beyond your intended date of departure from Israel. While some sources for visa-exempt travelers mention 3 months, the 6-month rule is the safest standard to ensure no issues with airlines or border control.

3. Proof of Onward Travel and Funds
Though not always requested, border officials may ask to see:

  • A return or onward ticket.
  • Evidence of sufficient funds for the duration of your stay.
  • Proof of travel health insurance that covers international medical costs.
4. Entry and Exit Stamps
Israel generally does not stamp passports at Ben Gurion Airport. Instead, you will receive a small blue paper slip (Entry Card).

  • Keep this slip with your passport at all times until you depart; it is proof of your legal entry and is often required for checking into hotels or for VAT tax refunds.
Important Considerations
  • Regional Travel: If you have stamps from certain countries in the region (e.g., Lebanon, Syria, or Iran), you may be subject to additional questioning by security, though it does not automatically bar you from entry.
  • Dual Citizenship: If you hold Israeli citizenship (even if you haven't lived there in years), you must enter and exit Israel using your Israeli passport. You do not need an ETA-IL if you have an Israeli ID number.

  • Security Situation: Due to the volatile nature of the region, it is highly recommended to check the Government of Canada’s Travel Advice immediately before your trip for any active safety advisories.

Many years ago when I flew from Montreal to Tel Aviv Ben Gurion airport via El Al there were several security precautions.

The exact time of departure was not published. We were told what time to be at the airport. After that we would be told when to board, usually within a 2 hour window.

Passing through El Al security in Montreal we were questioned about the nature and purpose of our visit, by a no-nonsense Israeli security agent.

As I have a Jewish last name, the agent asked me if I could speak Hebrew. She seemed suspicious when I said I only attended some "after public school" Hebrew school classes to prepare for my Bar Mitzvah.

So I told her that all I remembered was "Shmuel, shev b' shecket". That means "Samuel, sit down and be quiet!" The agent laughed out loud, and that was the end of her interrogation... :geek:

Btw that was my given Hebrew name, and not my given English name...
