A few times that I wanted to order a few things in the US I can't because I don't have a US credit card with a US Billing Address . Sure many places allow you to order ( using a Canadian credit card ) and ship the items to your US Address but there are a few that won't . It becomes a real pain in the ass .

For some friggen reason if you order on-line or even call to order the credit card must have a billing US Address . Any body know a way around this ? Is it possible to get a US credit card from one of their banks and use your US Address to show that's it's a US billing address but the bank really knows your real billing Canadian address ?

No.. you need to have a social security number to open a bank account in U.S... To get an SS number, you need to have proof of residence and proof of work in US.

Well, no, you need to have at least a TIN - a Taxpayer Identification Number. It's a lot like a Social Security Number, but is assigned to temporary residents who do not qualify for a SSN.

As for other requirements for a US-based credit card, I can't speak knowledgeably.

You can ship to a US address just on the other side of the border. Find the closest town to you on the other side of the border and google the name of the town with US shipping address. There are many mail drops that will accept your package for a fee. You have to pick it up on the other side and bring it back through customs.

What on earth John Henry would be a restricted item for shipment to Canada save perhaps for highly sensive computer software? I don't expect you to give an exact product but I truly am currious.

I have a US Master Card issued by the Bank of Montreal. It is billed to a Canadian address. Mostly it is for paying at US pumps when using a rental car down there. No big deal. Just go to the bank. Your 'identification address / postal code" is NOT the billing address. You just need to call and have the bank add it to your card. I used the hotel we were going to. I never changed it, and it still works fine.

You can also buy prepaid cards for many countries if you do not want to use your home bank.

:) Life is simple.

Many US companies simply cannot be bothered with the hassle of shipping to Canada. There are extra forms like Customs to fill out, risks of delays caused by Customs that upset customers who in turn blame the company etc.

And a lot of US companies don't even publish local telephone numbers, They are so proud of their 1-800 number (that does not work in Canada) that they don't publish their local number.

Interesting since I order stuff internationally on a regular although not routine basis, and I've never had a problem.

IIRC correctly, you are located in the USA?

My comment is specifically that many US based online companies have made the business decision that the incremental increase in sales to Canada and elsewhere are not worthwhile.

The fact is that Canadian and other international business' find the HUGE US market very worthwhile.

Thanks people some good ideas to follow up on . Normally I have no problem ordering goodies with my Canadian credit card . I always ship the goodies to my use Address and pick them up . Just the other week I had $380 in fishing stuff and the Canadian Border guard let me pass without paying HST . That was nice of him .

Places like Fleet Farm , Rapala USA and Home Depot USA will not let you order on line even if it's going to a US address . At home Depot USA the prices can differ as much as $100 per item compared to Home Depot Canada . GRRRR . They all want a US Card with a US Billing Address .

If you check Home Depot web site for instance many of the items are not available in the stores . They have to be ordered on-line and shipped to a Home Depot in the US or shipped to your US Address for pick-up . Again Grrrr for not being available in store .

Ah, I see the game they are playing which has more to do with their profit margin than some problem with shipping from the U.S. to Canada.

Could you do that have it shipped to a Home Depot in the Niagara Frontier or Detroit area and held for you? Other than that C.C.'s suggestion in #6 seems a solution.

Sometimes it is the policy of the head office not to sell to Canadians. BMW USA is not the same company as BMW Canada. Some auto companies will not sell to Canadians. I know that a while back Toyota/Lexus USA use to sell to Canadians and even honor the warranty in Canada. I do not know if they still do. Since most Canadians live withon 200 miles of the US/Canada border, Home Depot might not want Canadians to but in the USA, especially with the lower prices and bigger choices south of the border.

RBC Georgia is a sub of RBC Canada, but issues visa credit cards to Canadians via Canadian crunches. They will "look" like US credit cards (us CC number) and will even build you us credit history. No need for SSN or ITIN. I have a us address so I have two addresses registered on the card.
