I'm rekindling an old flame and we're having lunch next week.

We've had many pleasant meals in quiet spots with a mix of traditional or modern food. It will be downtown or on the Yonge Street line. My priorities are quiet, elegant but not stuffy or out of touch.

Just don't want to sit table-to-table with other diners even if the food is great.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

If you want a view that will blow her out of the water go to Canoe. They take requests but won't give "firm" reservations for window tables. The lobster club is reliable. Also the butter tarts.

Chloe and Hobbyhorse...thanks for the ideas...when I googled them, it triggered that I use social media for finding restaurants when I travel (just never thought about it at home). Both look pretty good; Sassafraz looks quieter with more space between the tables for quiet conversation. As I said, this is a "re-kindling" of past romance; not just a wow effect.

To wazup, and especially Frank Underwood...thanks for the reminder that there's great places to visit with the guys. The babes in the Tilted Kilt photo's look spectacular.

But that's a post for another day.

Keep the advice coming.

Lots of booths at the three Kegs downtown. I know it's a chain but the atmosphere is still good and what you are looking for.

Believe it or not but the pickle barrel at yonge Dundas also has good food and lots of booths.

"On the Yonge Line" and "Downtown" are too broad..
How quiet and intimate?
Cuisine and budget?
How far from downtown or subway line?

Alongside Chloe's recommendation, there's LOTS of options in and around Yorkville area:
Cafe Nervosa
Cafe Boloud at the Four Seasons
Caren's Rosedale (I mourn the loss of Carens in Yorkville)

Downtown
Gabardine (casual, grab a booth)
Tom Jones Steakhouse (quiet, very old worldesque, you might be the only folks in there)
Chase & Chase Fish & Oyster
Stratus (opposite Canoe)
Bymark (grab a booth, weekday can be extremely busy for business lunches)

This place might fit your bill. Great food at a reasonable price, location is close to City Hall, and I find the environment, from the bar to the seating area, to be tasteful and comfortable...

There's a restaurant called George that is inside an office building near Queen and Church. Haven't been there before, but it always seems quiet even during lunch.

I've been to George, it is fantastic and is a city institution. It is actually part of Verity, a women's private members only club housed in the same building. It has a gorgeous patio during the summers but is much closer to Jarvis than Church and the park out front is slightly a bit seedier in the evenings. Quiet a good lunch suggestion though albeit a bit more of a walk.

Agree, it's too broad...I'm starting to zero in on Yorkville. What's come up on yelp are: Trattoria Nervosa, Blu, One, Buca, Vaticano, plus a number of higher chain hotels have restaurants. I'll focus there and welcome any comments from those who have been. Thanks much.

Interesting, I just happened on it while working briefly in that office complex. Will have to try it sometime.

I don't know to much about what restaurants are in the downtown area. The only place I have been, and it was years ago, was The Old spaghetti Factory.

Mediocre food at this place and they're at the same level as Boston Pizza or East Side Mario's. Besides, the Spaghetti factory is a family or tourist type restaurant, but a place to bring a date.
