For Windows: Avast since 2006 with no problems and my router has a firewall.

For linux no AV is required and been running linux over 2 yrs with no problems.

Recently switched all my clients to Comodo. Works great but is annoying at first until all settings are established. Comes with free anti virus but did not install it. Use AVG free. Also Adaware-Spybot and Malware Bytes - C Cleaner. All free and work as well or better than the programs you need to pay for.

Good Luck

Windows comes with a firewall already so I don't think you need another one. Just if you do, and try to set up a network, remember you have TWO firewalls to change not just one. I did this and for the life of me couldn't figure out why the two computers couldn't "see" one another. Until doh, I happened to notice that Norton was putting up notifications that someone was trying to access my computer and it was blocking it......(fucking norton sucks rotten donkey ass).

Whatever you do DO NOT USE NORTON IT IS A RESOURCE HOG AND WILL SLOW DOWN YOUR SYSTEM IMMENSELY.

I will be installing CA soon. It seems to do everything norton does and doesn't slow down the system at all.....

I also have a HW firewall with my router. Is that enough? I've always heard to always have a SW firewall with the HW firewall for the "best" protection?

It looks like many agree.
Here's a thread that deals with that.
