Make sure you see a doctor first..tell him or her what you are planning. they can then recommend some sort of exercise plan for you. Yours truly Jim Nasium.

Remember, you get what you pay for. An inexpensive gym is bound to have operational and management problems.

Find a place with easy access to personal trainers. They can get you started off right. Twobig's recommendation was correct; see an MD for an exam first. Depending on your age, some reputable health clubs will ask to see a doctor's clearance before taking you as a member.

Many gyms are just cruising grounds for pick-up artists and lesbians. If that's what you're looking for make sure you ask before you join. ;-)

Get a trainer

you need a trainer . . a pro who will set up a routine for you and do it with you once a week. Unless you get into a regular routine, it won't do you any good. He or she can come to your condo gym.

La la land
read, read work it girl.

Before I started working out. I would go to the public library and read all those health/fitness magazine. I read them for 4- 6 months.
They said see a doctor and what is you goal. Mass/muscle or trim/lean 6 pack strength.
Then they talk of the ups/downs of trainers. SOme are qualified and some aren't etc. You ge the picture.
After 4 months reading I started to think of wroking out then brainwashing my head to a commitment. This was not going to be a night school 4 month course. bUt something really serious. So after two months of procastinating and thinking I joined and still doing it.

Anyway I can type here a page long. If you want more info PM me.

This post I disagree with strongly. You don't get what you pay for. Some of the more expensive gyms have less equipment and are tailored towards other activities such as racketball, tennis, swimming, ect. Subdave's dad's gym charges him 2500 a year. What you pay for depends on what you are looking for. The gym suits YOUR needs. You can get a good membership for 500 bucks a year...stick to the condo gym until you outgrow it. my gym costs little and ahs no problems what so ever. They do have high membership.

Personal trainers tend tol teach a newbie little, but charge 500+ bucks for a few short sesisons (8 -10). Miranda should get an experienced friend to teach her the basics before fine tuning with a reputable personal trainer. As a former personal trainer myself I'll tell you first hand that most of them don't know how to add muscle to hardgainer's bodies. Most have good genetics and little know how.

As for lesbians?? What are you talking about? What gyms do you go to? I've trained all over Toronto for 15 years and don't see/ hear about this happening. Sure some of the guys are pick up artists, but isn't that the same at bars, other clubs, everywhere?

technique..

And it's all about technique as well. if your not doing the excercises properly, your not going to see results.

I would suggest getting a personal trainer for the first few weeks.
That way he will show you proper form, for what you want to do to your body. He will also set up a routine for you to follow. Once your into the routine and know what to do you can go it on your own.

A partner is also helpful to go with, you could split the cost of the personal trainer and the buddy system always seems to work better! I find it gives you more incentive.

I'd be interested, Miranda. Maybe we could work something out?

I found gyms so mind-numbingly boring, I took up martial arts... I burn about 800 calories per hour, and I love doing it so I go every chance I get.

Just an option if you ever get bored... it's not worth it if you hate doing it... that's fo shizzle ma spizzle.

Routines change all the time. The body is smart and adapts. So a trainer writes down the basics, breaks it up into a 4 day split (so she comes 4 days a week, more $$$$). Trainers at a gym have financial motives which aren't pure.

During the first month or two just get used to the movements. Most trainers, especially women (don't bust my balls) lack the coordination, or mind muscle connection to real do the exercise properly at an elementary stage. Let the mind and body coordinate for a while...keep it simple...check form in the mirror..once you get going there are thousands of exericses to choose from. the key is to be able to fill up your target muscle with plenty of blood (gives nutrients, takes out wastes).

Miranda says all she has done is a little cardio. It'll take her body a while to coordinate. Trust me. She's got a gym for now...her condo.

Miranda. What are your goals ??

A) define goals
B) develop your routine and stick with it varying it every so often as your muscle will adapt like BB says.
c) vary intensity of workout to shock both types of muscle fibres (fast and slow twitch muscles)
d) important to diet properly (and I don't mean fasting !) .. watch your caloric intake .. higher in protein .. lower in carbs. Drink lots of water !
e) make sure form is correct ! .. really important. Can't stress enuf
f) if you can fight through the soreness caused by lactic acid build up (about 1-2 weeks pending your ability to recoup) .. half the battle is won !

... and last but not least .. you'll need a good rub down after every workout to rid body of toxins. Its a thankless job but someones gotta do it so I'll volunteer ! :>)

Good luck !
