Hi Everyone
Well after 30 years of working I am finally going into semi retirement. So I was thinking I need a way to send myself off in great style. Please either post them here or Pm me any suggestions. I am not leaving my job till July so i have a little bit of time to collect all the data lol. When I make a decission of what I /you have decided I will do a final review of the main event (BTW I am not stopping hobbying lol). Be creative but remember Iam over 50 lol

Retirement at a young age is not all it is cracked up to be. Not only do you have to prepare financially you need to prepare how to spend your time. I lasted less than a year at being retired and then went back to work on my schedule and part time only, instead of the 7 day weeks I was working before. I had to do something totally unrelated as I had a non-comp contract with the sale of my business. Important to have something to do to keep your sanity, golf just didn't do it. I now work part time - make more money now(and certainly wasn't suffering before) working very part time than I ever made before with far less effort and pay far less tax. I spend as much time as I can with my favorite blond (important to have some outside interests), and my grand kids as is possible.
So my advice to you - take a year to do all the things you always thought you'd want to do and do them. Join and gym and workout regulary. I went back to school and took some courses - damn, I love college girls!!!! Network, network and network some more during the year, have lunch with everyone you didn't have time to do before. Then use one or several of the skills you developed over your working years and find a part time career to keep you from going nuts for the next 20 years. Then couple all of that with balance - oh - and one more thing - get the hell out of Toronto to warmer climes for December, January and February just to make sure you never ruin your shoes in snow again. Unfortunately I'm not leaving this year until after New Years as I had some details to wind up but I try not to break this rule ever.

On the same note, how does one compute how much they need in $ per year for retirement? I know YMMV depending on what is your hobbies but what would be resonable.

There are so many factors involved in this topic and every 'expert' has opinions. The 2/3rds rule held sway for many years but now most people have grand expectations for retirement so this may not be enough. The best advice is to find a financial planner that you trust and let them use their models to build you a plan.

Or you can just join clubhombre and find out how to do it yourself for a lot less and meet the same girls.

Then go to Rio (or Thailand, depending on your tastes...)

If there are two of you and you live in Toronto, you will need at least $100K after tax, if you own your home. If you are a regular hobbyist, you may need a little more. Look at VBB. He must drop close to $50K a year, based on his multi reviews, and that is probaly closer to $80K-$90K before taxes, on hobbying alone.

Keep working. You probably can't afford to retire and may not enjoy it anyway. You'll just worry about not having enough $$$.

Good luck:(
