I'm looking for some advice/referrals. Paint in an upper floor bedroom is peeling off the ceiling and there appears to be a breach in the tarpaper membrane on my gravel-and-tar roof, which, by my research was recovered by the previous owner (DIY guy) about 25 years ago. Any recommendations for roofing companies that are reliable and fair?
Much appreciated, Roli

Try to wait until mid/late October if it's not an emergency.
Roofing companies start offering HUGE discounts at the end of the season.
Got ours done 2 years ago in November and it was about 60% off their summer rate with same materials.

As for companies?
The bigger the better as they don't subcontract and do the work themselves.

Here are the 3 we chose from back then.........

We went with Golden Triangle and they did a great job.

Don't use the company whose tar pot caught fire and burned down a school in Guelph recently

Huh, there's an idea - the insurance may be worth more than the house at this point. (But I didn't say that).

BTW, thanks DJ, I can wait a while, so if roofing companies drop their rates in the fall, I'll wait and see.

Many do because they basically don't work in winter and try to get as much business as possible until they shut it down until spring.

If it is a flat roof then I would suggest Aquahalt roofing I don't have the number handy but you will find them in the yellow pages. For a peaked roof I would call Roof Saver.

CBR (Craig Bowman Roofing) In Guelph did mine.... Not the cheapest but definitely fair priced and quality work. Also got him to install a Sun Tunnel (gives as much sun as a skylight for a fraction of the cost)

One thing I did learn through the roof shopping process is that if you get a lesser quality roofer a lot of them don;t know how to set the pressure on their pneumatic nail guns and drive the nails right through the shingle.... I was taken through a new build development and shown all the shingles falling off brand new houses because of that reason.

Might also try Waymar. Good reputation locally. Whoever you get, don't delay too long through the fall if they can't give a firm date commitment and you end up late and then in the middle of your job when the first snow/ice hits in the middle of your job. Ouch. Don't ask.
