This is catch up and still behind - 3 years later and still not close to the Chinese - in fact more than 10 times less effective than the older Chinese attempt - and by now the Chinese have improved.

I'm no expert but it sounds like they have to send target protons to the satellite first.

Directly quoting the article “Previous teleportation experiments between distant locations were limited to a distance on the order of 100 kilometers, due to photon loss in optical fibers or terrestrial free-space channels,” and it speaks of minimizing the amount of atmosphere in the way.
