An NAACP leader's parents have made a startling revelation: their daughter, for years a highly visible civil rights activist in Eastern Washington, is white.

Rachel Dolezal, Spokane's NAACP Chapter President and part-time Africana Studies professor at Eastern Washington University, has been misleading people about her ethnicity for years, her parents say.

Her mother even offered photographic proof. While today the 37-year-old divorcee currently sports tight, dark curls, her mom Ruthanne Dolezal showed KREM photos of the fair and freckled blonde daughter she once knew.

Dolezal is now facing a city ethics probe after she identified herself as black in an application to serve on a local police ombudsman commission - a position she secured.

Colour choice is one of the commonest, unimportant choices everyone makes all the time.

Now, if this were a matter of some real and significant distortion and misrepresentation of meaningful facts, there'd perhaps be something for us lookers-on to get excited about.

Well with the Bruce Jenner thing identifying himself as a woman, I guess anyone can identify themselves as something they are originally not.

From reading one of the articles, it seem she lied about her dad being an African-American and had some guy posing as her father which is probably the main point here. Why all the lies?

The question is did she use her status as a black person to further her career?

Did she ever use a phrase like "as a person of colour you as a white person wouldn't understand what I go through"? To make a point and shut down opposition.

It goes to credibility. She is in fact in a profession that race does count at this point in history. We all hope that changes one day but until then her specifically lying about it just to improve her standing within her chosen vocation is a big deal.

Lying and getting caught in politics is always going to get you in shit.

Sure that's true but what is race? We are all genetically the same. The experience of a light skinned black person is markedly different than a darker skinned black person. It's definitely true that racism exists and people still judge others by their skin colour (like fuji).

If she self identifies as black and has lived that life for years and years- will her experience be much different than a lighter skinned black person.

When tiger was riding high he was oftened referred to as a man of mixed heritage or an asian- African man but since his decline all I hear is he is a black guy.

Did she do wrong? It's hard to say without more facts but if it came to a trial- how do prove she isn't black? Genetically we are all scatterlingss of africa. We are all human beings and we should be proud of the accomplishments of the whole human species.

How ironic. Organizations fighting against discrimination basically admitting to discrimination against white people. Awkward .....

Should a person who self identifies themselves as a black person not be treated and identified by the government and others as a black person? I don’t know. Similar to a male who self identifies himself as a female, she must be treated and identified as a female by others.

I guess it depends on whether she has done good things or not

Again I'll try to make my point.

It doesn't matter who she represents herself as.

According to accepted societal norms presently in the USA and accepted by her employer at this time she is white. This takes nothing away from her obvious commitment to improving race relations and all of the issues entailed therein.

But the issue is she essentially can be considered a liar. That she identifies with black culture due to her upbringing doesn't make her black according to how things are presently in the USA.

And if she is going to be public figure and advocate then her effectiveness relies heavily on her credibility. Trust is huge in a position like this.

The question now is does it hurt the organization? Honestly I don't know the answer.

But the question of whether she did it for personal gain or genuine identification is now open.

This is an interesting discussion given we are talking about a person who works for an organization that is defined by race.

I get your point I just don't agree with it. Entirely.

If you go back far enough - her ancestors are black. They are from africa. Her parents may not identify with being black- that's their choice.
