Has anyone done this kind of work? I've been looking into it, but most seem to be scams or
not have anything available. I'm looking for a way to supplement my income a little but do it
on my own time and this seems like one of the ways to do so. Any input would be appreciated.

There are a number of legit operations but most are done through PI, threat management or security firms. There are a few operation in TO, but I can't remember their names. It's a tough grind, from the standpoint of bang for the buck. You spend a lot of time writing some reports and will often not get the properly compensated for those reports, because yo may be getting piece work rates and not hourly rate, but the easy ones make up for it.

you also need to factor in gas, and the amount you have to spend on goods (that won't be reimbursed)

1/4 of Ontario's minimum wage, if that much

A friend of mine once got hired doing this.

As another esteemed respondent to your post says, you won't make much. The overheads are high: gas and your time travelling, and the churning detailed reports. All this work amounts to getting much less than our minimum wage.

Not a good investment.

Better to do some factory work for a few weeks and then quitting.

This.

Some outfits don't even pay cash. Just "perks" like vouchers to use at retail. Again, after crunching the numbers, you'll be making less than minimum wage.

If you eat out a bit you might look into the restaurant chains that do this. While not really for income you would definitely be getting breaks on your meals.
