Somewhere in Kyiv, I lost contact with him, he was there to visit his Mom as it's been 2 years since he saw her because of the pandemic, I told him last week he should leave Ukraine and come back to Canada but he said he can't leave his Mom who can't travel. The last time I communicated with him was Feb 23.

A friend of mine called me in tears yesterday. She's from Lviv and has been in Toronto since 2002. Her family is all still there. Her brother has 2 little kids and has re joined the Ukrainian army to "protect his family". Her mom is too ill to flee. Her dad's a pensioner and a stroke survivor. Since the old guy had military service under the old USSR, he's training civilians how to use AK's when the Russians come.

Apparently the internet went down for a bit, and buddy probably has more pressing matters to attend to.
I wouldn't assume the worst.

I tune in to news sources on youtube CNN, CBC, ABC, NBC, DW, not Russian State-Run TV (AKA Fox News) to see if they interview people in underground subways, maybe he's taking shelter in the subways.

The fighting in Kiyev is very sporadic. Putin wanted to seize the capital quickly with small units of lightly armed paratroopers and that's not enough to break through the Ukrainian defence.

So Putin's choice is to send in artillery and tanks to level the city, the way the Russians did in Chechnya. But then he has to admit to the Russian people that the Ukrainians are fighting hard for their freedom and it's not just a clique of "neo nazis" who have hijacked the country. And even the Russians are going to start scratching their heads about his BS!

So your friend is probably okay for the time being.

The Ukrainian authorities do not allow men military age to leave the country. My great aunt from Kiev and her family crossed into Poland a couple of days ago. If he has a Canadian passport he'll probably take one of the evac trains west.

I was watching this footage of Ukrainians crossing into Romania. So far I know Kyiv is still holding strong.

A friend of mine from work came to Canada from Ukraine a couple of years before the Soviet Union fell. She still has a sister there, can't get in touch with her and is terrified about what's happening. When she told me about it last Thursday she was in tears and I felt completely helpless to do anything to comfort her. It's a scary time for a lot of people.

Good news, my friend contacted me today, he and his Mom made it into Poland. He's staying with his Mom for now. Unsure when he will come back to Canada. He is a Canadian citizen, so when he was asked to come back to fight, he showed his passport.
