The human race may be in danger. In only several dozen generations, we can undo millions of years of evolution.

Our bodies are marvelous machines. They are incredibly complex, designed to fight disease and help us survive. Over millions of years, only the most well-equipped bodies that were able to withstand the harsh conditions would pass on to the next generation. Why do many people have a fear of heights? Because those who were afraid of climbing perilously high places were less likely to die and pass on their offspring. Why do most people vomit after eating toxins? Because those developed this reflex were able to survive, and those who didn't perished. Through this fine-tuning, we have arrived at our present condtion. Think of all the things our bodies do, and how complex each one of those things is. The eye, our immune system, our digestive system.... They are all unfathomably complex systems, developed over millions of years. There is a reason for why we are the way we are: We are designed to survive the harsh, real world.

Every aspect of human behaviour has been selected for, even our social ones. Those who lacked social skills, or who were a detriment to the well being of society were ostracized and then most likely perished from the gene pool. In a sense, each one of us is piece of a larger "machine" (society). If you are a defiicent or broken piece that does not contribute to the well-being of this machine, and can't get along with the other pieces, the machine must "eject" you in order to survive and remain healthy. Thus, society shuns and punishes those who murder, rape, steal...

However, with modern science and technology, we are slowly de-evolving. Now, people with heart disease, diabetes, blindness, deafness, psychological disorders, etc. are all able to survive and pass on their genes. More and more people are relying on medicines to keep them alive. People who are infertile and would not have otherwise been able to pass on their genes can do so in a lab. Those who have no social skills and can't get along with others, and who are a detriment to society are still having children. More people who cannot control their behaviour, and who are drains on society are leeching off the rest of us.

Ironically, the technology that has enabled the weaker of us to survive in the short-term, will be the cause of a long-term deterioration of the human race. This downward spiral will continue until humanity reaches a point where it can no longer survive.

You're assuming humanity can actually sustain the complex and expensive—dollars and resources—standard of living that makes "de-evolution" possible. I'd say odds are against it.

'Sides, there's always the hungry, "un-de-evolved" barbarians lurking just outside the borders of the Empire who we can count on eventually to overrun us effete New Romans and infuse us w/ their primitive vigor and vitues.

Perhaps it is because there are those who have evolved too much and those who have not.

Having unprotected sex, and producing children is a barbaric act.

The best and the brightest amongst us are beyond such activity.

Don't worry the next world war will work all that out and we will be back to the survival of the fittest.

Before any war wipes us all out I think mother nature will have her own say on the progress of our evolution. She will be the cleansing fire that will reunite humanity, at least for a short while.
