Neck muscles are likely in spasm which can be really painful. Like Marla said, I also go to a reputable Chiropractor once a month which keeps my back and neck healthy. I find that if I skip a few months I'll develop pain.
Chiro, massage and even acupuncture treatments are usually the best option. Painkillers treat symptoms, not the cause which is why I never take them. Good luck, neck pain sucks.

No one can answer that question for you unless they know what the problem is. If it's just sore muscles, a massage will help. If it's a disc issue, massage will not solve the problem. If the disc is impinging on a nerve, a chiropractor could do more harm than good if he doesn't have a look at x-rays and/or an MRI before he treats you. Traction, administered by a physiotherapist, could relieve the pain (if disc related), but may not be able to resolve it on an ongoing basis. You may need surgery (discectomy) if there is to much degeneration.
Don't ask for advice here. Go see a doctor if the problem is significant enough.

Better yet go see a doctor, Canada has free health care!
