My Good Buddy "Betty" (GPS)
I talk about how "Betty" kept me from getting lost in my Fort Erie Pure Platinum review since Central Ave was closed, but its been suggested I post some info in the lounge since others have expressed interest in it.
I mention my GPS at times, as I totally love it. I have set up all my possible destinations ahead of time in its address book. It displays and voice directs me to every turn from wherever I am. It triangulates between 4-6 GPS satellites and is updated once per second with my position, speed, time to next turn, time to destination etc. It also can show every ATM, hotel, restaurant and most other businesses and points of interest.
The map scale automatically changes based on time to next turn. I have it mounted on a bean bag mount on the dash of my rental car. As I reported on prior trips (thought lost going back roads in Niagara Falls to Cristals and PE55 missing the turn off the QEW) even when I thought it was crazy and taking me the wrong way but it was right every time taking me to the right place.
For those curious the entire package costs about $US600 vs $2000 or more for optional non portable systems built in to many newer cars. Like other GPS folks, I refer to it as "Betty" which comes from what aviators in World War II called their voice navigation systems.
My good buddy Betty is a Garmin iQue 3600
Info at http://www.garmin.com/products/iQue3600/ but don't get their new 3200 unit, which is not nearly as good and just a little cheaper.
It's a bit tricky to lean especially and getting updated maps loaded, unless you have used a Palm type unit before.
Great helpful discussion board at http://www.pdastreet.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?s=&forumid=108
