My dog, in this cold weather, is going nuts with dry skin

I tried Gold Bond and it has worked well in the last 24 hours. No scratching or pulling his hair out with his teeth. Yes it was messy going on but had to do something for the poor guy. He's a Golden Retriever.

I'm sure you know, but it's worth saying that many human products can be harmful to dogs.

If you have a humidifier maybe that would help? Perhaps more baths to put the water back in the skin?

+1 for the humidifier. Dunno about pets, but they have done wonders for my family members with dry winter skin problems.

I have dry skin and itching problems in the winter. If your dog is OK with a bath Aveeno Oatmeal colloidal powder works for me and was reco by a dermatologist. Availabale at shoppers Drug @ 15 bucks a box of 12 packets.

Try feeding the dog a tablespoon of olive oil and raw egg. Do this once a week for 2-3 weeks.

My cocker spaniel has sensitive skin and is prone to itchiness. I
bath him with Earthbath pet shampoo which comes in several
formulation. I mostly used the Hypo-Allergenic variety. I also
tried the oatmeal&aloe formulation which I guess is
more suitable for dry skin.

Dry skin can be environmental, can be diet, can be a combination. The cold weather can do it, so try the humidifier. If you're feeding him dry food, add some liquids to the food, fish oil, olive or canola oil, raw egg. Agree 100% with The Oracle on fish oil. We blend the salmon oil from tinned salmon into our dog food for a special treat. And we don't even have a dog!!!

Agreed. Our last golden developed an allergy to chicken of all things. Our new golden is allergic to beef. A vet visit is probably best.

Thanks guys. Good suggestions here. I'm going to try a couple and leave the vet to last and only if the rest don't work.

How do you know it's just dry skin and not fleas or ticks? I'd recommend a visit to the vet too.
