 I do not know if it is a virus or spyware. Someone suggeated that I use SPYBOT-search and destroy. I would like to know it this is the best option.
After I take out all spyware and viruses, what is the best way to keep them from coming back? Are the pay for use options better than the free options that are found on the internet?

S&D is very good and so is the Beta version of Microsoft Anti-spyware, both are free for now..

I had the same problem. Go and down load Spybot. It's most likely you've got hundreds of pieces of spyware running that you don't even know about. After that make sure you have a firewall/router and get yourself some decent anti virus software and run it regularly. When I cleaned up all my spyware, I had over 300 on my PC. When I spoke to my computer geek he told me he had a customer with over 1200.

Between a rock and a hard place
Spyware Warrior.

step 1. Search for hijackthis software.
step 2. download and run it. save the log file.
step 3. Register on the following forum
http://www.spywarewarrior.com/index.php
step 4. post your hijackthis log file.
step 5. Check back for a response in about a 48 hours.
step 6. If no response in 72 hours repeat step 2. and post log on the 72-hour bump forum.

Once underway you will get new instructions on a daily basis until you are spyware free. These guys know it all and do a thorough job.

Thanks everyone for the spybot search & destroy advice, I just cleaned my system out of a few hundred pesky varmints and it's working nice and fast now. It only took about 15 minutes.
I'd heard about these programs but didn't know if I should trust them, I'm clueless with computers.
