So, my esteemed colleagues, now that Blu-Ray is in my life and I'm loving every minute of it, what are the truly essential films that one must have in their personal library in order to take full advantage of this great new format?

I'm not about to go and get a whole new collection to replace my DVD's, however, there are certain films that deserve the newer format to be watched and enjoyed in.

These films truly need to be Epic in scope, Grand and ultimately: Cinematic!

My list so far:

LAWRENCE OF ARABIA

BEN HUR

DOCTOR ZHIVAGO

RED CLIFF

BRIDGE ON THE RIVER KWAI

ONCE UPON A TIME IN THE WEST

RAN

THE ENGLISH PATIENT

REDS

OUT OF AFRICA

HERO

LOTR - TRILOGY

HOUSE OF FLYING DAGGERS

BOURNE - TRILOGY

I'd love to hear any other comments and inputs from the Cineastes amongst us.

Blue ray is probably the only 1080P source you'll find for your 1080P TV.... it looks (and sounds) fantastic.

Bridge Over The River Kwai
Blade Runner
The French Connection (imagine that car chase in HD!)
2001: A Space Odyssey

@ Rono - tywillis is right, once you've seen a Blu-Ray on a good quality HD television, you will never look a TV in the same way ever again.

I agree with onthebottom. I have bought several blu ray discs even though I had the original DVD's. The quality of the picture, if seen on an HDTV, is simply amazing, and in many cases, breathtaking.

the hobby needs more capitalism
Blu-ray?

Pfft. Download MKV's (they're ripped Blu-Ray movies) and stream them to your HDTV in 1080p. That's what I do. =)

Same quality and its free.

I wouldnt buy LOTR just yet, its just a port of the standard length movie.
The rumor is a longer directors' cut verison is slated to come out either the end of this year or early next.
