If you're looking for complete albums all I do is do a google search for the album name and band name in separate quotes along with rapidshare. So say if you were looking for the latest Springsteen disc then type in:
"bruce springsteen" "working on a dream" rapidshare
There are all kinds of music blogs out there with users posting full albums to file sharing sites like rapidshare. There are others as well like megaupload but rapidshare seems to be the most popular with uploaders.

Is pretty good. Found a fav 41 yr old vinyl LP from back in the college days on there that couldn't be found anywhere else. Took 5 minutes to download. Still have the vinyl LP. Now I have a CD version...

Torrent sites are great,just be sure to use a program like peer guardian http://phoenixlabs.org/pg2/ to cover your ass !!!
Rapid Share is a safer way, but selection is more limited than torrent sites.You CAN get lucky on your search there as was already stated here.A site I use that has a pretty good resource section is http://www.oneddl.com/ free too join and less "bugs" than the usual torrent site may have.

Like S.T. says, Youtube. I haven't tried the online thing, but you can use free converting software too. You can get practically anything you can think of. There are also lots of absolutely legal things to dl off Youtube. I now listen to lots of music from amateurs. The quality is often excellent.
To my knowledge, this hasn't happened to anyone in Canada. In the U.S., they seem to cherrypick the busiest dl'ers to make an example of them and scare others. I would guess it's a simple matter to catch such folks.
Months ago this worked great. Lately though the RIAA Record Nazis have been removing a lot of the high quality content making it harder to find good quality audio. There are still some great quality clips available but most is of poorer sound quality now.....
