Mulcair made the niqab a major election issue thinking he would capture the Muslim vote. He failed to realize that many Muslims, especially women, oppose the niqab, as evidenced by the fact that hundreds of Muslim women in Canada do not wear the niqab. Many of these women escape their Islamic homeland to avoid wearing the niqab. So, Mulcair was fighting for the right to wear the niqab that the majority of Muslim women didn't need nor want.
