Here
I made the mistake of clicking on a link that a friend sent me via MSN messenger. In reality, he did not really send it, it was a virus within his computer that was distributing infected links to people on his contact list.

Long story short, now I have the virus in my MSN Messenger and it is sending these same rogue messages to people on MY contact list. They say something like "hey i found this cool site, check it out, lots of hot naked chicks" or something similar.

The problem is that Norton or McAfee or AVG wont detect it, even on a full system scan. Has anyone run into this problem, and if so, have you found a utility to run to get rid of the virus/trojan? I dont want to start deleting things I dont recognize and really screw things up.

I had it too

Just go "START" - "CONTROL PANEL" - "ADD/DELETE PROGRAMS"

GO in and delete MSN and WIndows messenger program. Also delete the folder it was in and the desktop shortcut.

Then...Just go back in and reload the program from MSN.....create a new folder and park it there (IN Program FILES). Once you log back in Address book and all will be there...but your computer will have ditched the link to the virus (AS the folder has moved)

The virus will in effect have been quarantined and left as an unrecognizable and unlinkable file.

Just in case ...

.... if GOLEAFSGO67 didn't work. Try this:

Using Internet Explorer, go to:

http://security.symantec.com/sscv6/default.asp?langid=ie&venid=sym

Click any one of those button! Then under Virus Detection, click Start. You might be told that you need to download and install ActiveX Controls for the scan to work, answer Yes.

Write down exactly anything it finds, then go to: http://www.symantec.com/search/ and do a search for what was found. Symantec usually has a removal tool and/or directions for removing manually. Make sure that you follow the instructions for removal, step by step, especially the part regarding disabling System Restore.

Hope this helps!

Question Disturbia??

I already have Norton.

I explored that link you posted....It is NORTON associated. Is that not already in my Norton ANtiVirus pack.......or is it something differnt that will dig deeper for more viruses?

You should be fine, however, there are many cases that users are expected to boot their computers with removable drives (floppy disks / USB / bootable CD/DVD, etc) created by Norton and or others in order to get rid of more nasty viruses / malwares.

Using online virus scanners sometimes helps with this. Also, they provide users with a simple and step by step guide on how to clean their systems.

In case of the original author, I suspect his antivirus program is either outdated or disabled. Otherwise, he should've been warned by his antivirus program regarding this malware. To the best of my knowledge and as of today, there has been no recent report of new virus / malware for MSN Messenger. So, any updated and well maintained antivirus program should be able to prevent these issues. It did not on his machine, therefore, I suggested the online solution.

Hope this answers your question. :)
