Hi all, I was wondering if anyone would care to share their experience of having an MRI of their head. I'm not asking about the reason for the MRI or personal medical information, but rather how you handled the actual procedure. I may be having one soon and have to admit I'm pretty nervous. I've had an MRI of one of my knees, but I was only put into the machine up to my chest. Thanks in advance.

It depends. I have had an Istent implanted in my eyes for glaucoma. So I have to a carry a card with the acceptable Teslas. 99% of the time, it is safe on any body part with no metals.

I had two MRIs done on my coocoozz after the car accident. The first one was a joke, don't ever get an MRI done at York Regional (McKenzie Health Center) in Richmond Hill. Always ask for another location, its worth it. I had a second done at KMH Cardiology Center, they were thorough. I had to go through several scans with a state of the art Siemens machine, they found the damage from the collision. I spent almost two hrs at KMH, just over half and hour at York.

Depends on the person. I'm ok but my mom never was. She needed meds to help her through it.

You really never know until you are in it yourself. The key is to be open and vocal with the staff. They have dealt with it all so if your are nervous - say so. Whatever you need, just tell them. They will do everything they can to help you through it.

I'm borderline claustrophobic and I've had two head MRI's. Not the most pleasant experience but better than a root canal. While you're in there they do play music and if you have any issues there is a panic button in your hand. Just try to remain calm and think positive thoughts - like getting a sloppy BJ from your favorite SP :)

Had many after brain surgery. The only problem is claustrophobia for some people. It's a bit noisy and long but they give headphones. As k says, just think of blow jobs and you will be fine.

Just take the meds and go to sleep. You don't need to get your self in this much trouble.

I’ve had a few. Never on my head though. I can definitely see how people could freak out.

I had one a few years ago and if you’re claustrophobic like I am it can be an unpleasant experience.
The best thing to do is to just try and remain as calm as possible and to keep your eyes closed, it’s very bright in there so just try and pretend you’re lying on a beach soaking up some rays.

Had 2 over the years on the head. Should mention claustrophobia has always been an issue with me. Upon arrival to the machine and it’s conveyor I had immediate concerns, however I had my big boy pants on and proceeded. Laying on the convey the tech placed my head in what I can only describe as a bench vise. As she tightened the jaws I knew this was going to be trouble. I had her release me and I walked it off in the mri room. She explained there were others scheduled and we had to proceed, do you think a blindfold might help? I agreed and proceed. On with the blindfold, in the vise then I felt the conveyor move me in. She had me pull both shoulders in so to fit. Yea it was tight. When the conveyor stopped she placed her hand on my ankle and said this is how much of you is sticking out of the machine. I could have slapped her for that.
The next 20 minutes felt like hours. All I could think about was how they would get me out of here if there were a power failure. She talked to me through the ear piece periodically through the process.
The second mri was years later. I expressed my anxiety to my Dr and she gave me a relaxer to place under the tongue 30 minutes prior. I did so and as I walked in the waiting room I saw a photo on the wall of the machine and began to sweat profusely. I knew it was a no go. They rescheduled the appt where they put me out for the procedure. That’s the way to go in my opinion.
There is now an open concept mri machine that my son went in. I think I could do ok in that one.
Good luck with yours

Yair gets noisy sometimes so get the headphones and listen to music. They often ask which type of music. Definitely close your eyes. Had a few MRI's on the top paddock. Found nothing but cement between the ears lol.

The claustrophobia can be rough on folks. But the regular MRI is over in half the time of the open MRI machine. So i think through...hmm...3 minutes a song, I'll be done in 10 songs. And then you're done in the middle of song 7. I get a Hanson brother "I'm listening to the fucking song!!!" mentality which keeps me still takes up my focus onto the tunes.

Wow I had one a few years back and I fell asleep. I wasn't aware people had bad experiences with them.

Buffalo MRI has what’s called and open Mri which helps a lot. Book that and take the pills to relax yourself. Bring a buddy to drive you home and grab some wings while you are over the border

Closing your eyes and breathing definitely helps. Remember to stay still too :)

OHIP no longer covers trips to Buffalo for medical procedures - but that would not stop me.

Instead of pills, I'd reserve a reward for getting through it. The Parmesan Garlic Wings at Chef's on 16th and Chicago St or Wise Guys Pizza in Seneca.

Btw the owners of Anchor Bar are longtime Internazionale tifosi. I had a talk with pops about it and he gave my table a free jug of draught...the grappa shots I paid for.

I had an MRI on my head 2 weeks ago at Sunnybrook at 530 am. They operate 24/7.

Yes it's loud and your head is made immobile so it is a bit uncomfortable. The technician talks to you during the procedure to let you know what is happening and you do have a panic button.

If your MRI says contrast as mine did, you will get an IV as they inject a dye to get a before and after picture. All told it was about 30 minutes. I did not take the meds. I just played a round of golf in my mind to pass the time. Scored well actually.

Don't worry. Unless you are claustrophobic it's not a big deal. There are some videos on Youtube showing how the procedure works.

My last MRI I had done in the open tube at Buffalo MRI.

It was on my elbow though not my head. The sides being open was much more easy.

It lasted 30 minutes I believe and I shut my eyes and just started counted beats in my head.

The suggestion of lorazepam is a good one, especially if you are not used to it and haven't built up a tolerance.

I've had 4 MRI's in my lifetime.

Don't forget to ask the technician to take an MRI of your erection. LOL!

I had one MRI in my life. It was a breeze except the gown they gave me didn't fit so I had body parts hanging out. The MRI found a herniated disc and that was the cause of my back pain.
