I know some of you own bikes, so maybe you could answer this question.

I've been thinking about buying a motorcycle. I have never owned one, or insured one before. What sort of rate can I expect to pay for insurance on bike? [I am a six star driver on my car, no claims, no violations - if that matters. I am 30.]

Thanks Paul. I was thinking about 600cc Race Bike. Are those rates for a first time insured bike driver? They seem good.

Yea, I just got a quote for a low end starters bike and the quote was almost double what you posted.

My driving record is brutal and I'm paying 1500 a year for full coverage..ouch. I pay less on an 80,000 dollar Mercedes, go figure.
Less than 1500 a yr for the Mercedes .... no shit.
Pretty good deal Paul, which insurance co you are using ?

I think my agent is not giving me the best rate then.

Try Primmum Insurance online. You can do a quote on the internet and find out what you're likely to pay. I pay $1,500 for a '97 Harley. And that was the best deal going.

I'm also paying under 1500 a year for my $80,000 vette. Full coverage too but i chose the larger deductible of $1000 for collisiion to get this rate. This is with 2 minor tickets as well.

Motors Insurance......they are owned by GMAC........but do insure other non-gm vehicles as well. My other car is non gm and they gladly will insure it at better rates than anyone.

In a place far, far away
Good ahead and get a bike. Ontario needs more organ donors - just remember to sign you donor card.

First of all

You MUST take a government approved M1 training course.
This will cost about $300.00 and take a Fri/Sat/Sun weekend.
If you do not try $3000.00 or more for insurance for any bike if you are under 25 and male.
Once you are "trained" and have your M2 lic, try getting a quote on a 500cc to 750cc cruiser type bike. If you put collison and comp on I agree the quotes of $1000.00 are about right.
Try the 600cc to 1000cc sport bike and you can double that.
Also all the insurance rates just about doubled this year from last.
So if you have not bought recently you will not believe the rates.
In Quebec you must also have an approved security alarm on the bike your you are not insurable.
As a final thought, the over 35 "born again" crowd is starting to get hit hard due to the number of claims so I agree and check on line.
You may be able to buy the bike but not afford the insurance to ride.
The fine in ON for riding without insurance is $5000.00 and then you go into the high risk pool for both your bike and car. Be prepared to sell one or both your toys if this happen as the primeuims are generally 3x the normal rate and up.

When you crash a 10,000 dollar bike it's usually a write off
Unfortunately, your insurance isn't so high because the write off the bike, its because in most "bad" accidents, they end up writing off the owner.

Most gruesome accident I ever saw was a racebike accident. It took the OPP 6 white sheets to cover the parts of the victim.

This cost of insurance for a bike is discouraging enough...no need for your "most" gruesome sighting...i am sure we all have a few stories to tell but lets not stray from why this thread was started...not a flame..but i am finding the insurance topic very informative.
Point well made and well taken. No Hijacking intended.
