If you're under 55, you might want to re-think that fourth, fifth or sixth cup of Joe: A new study holds troubling news for younger coffee lovers.

Drinking more than 28 cups of coffee a week - about four per day - was linked to a 21% higher mortality rate in men and women of all ages, and a 50% higher mortality rate in people under 55 years old, according to a study of 40,000 people published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings.

Interestingly enough in the same article;

It sounds like a blow to the accumulating evidence that suggest coffee isn't so bad for us. Long associated with heart risks, stress, and unhealthy behaviors like smoking and drinking, coffee has more recently been touted for its high antioxidant content and protective effects against diseases like diabetes. A National Institutes of Health study published last year found older adults who drank coffee had a lower risk of death.

This study doesn't reverse those positive findings about coffee, but suggests there's more to explore about the effects of its complex blend of caffeine and other chemicals on our bodies, particularly at higher doses, said study co-author Dr. Carl Lavie, director of the department of cardiovascular diseases at Ochsner Medical Center in New Orleans.

The study is complete garbage.

The only thing the numbers suggest is a correlation between smoking, high coffee consumption, and early death. There is nothing in the study to indicate causation, and other studies have found that high-stress jobs are highly correlated with all three - with yet others suggesting that it is the stress that kills, not the coffee.

Hmmm... I usually drink four cups of coffee each day before noon. Sincerely, Jon .

I could have sworn that a study last year or so concluded the opposite.

I agree that causation is hard to show in a study about people.

whats the flavour this month? it's bad to drink this amount of this and that and next month its the opposite. Makes you wonder what hidden biz funds these studies.

I wouldn't necessarily jump to that conclusion. Until we create masses of human clones, keep them locked up, and regulate every aspect of their lives, there are too many variables to control that these kinds of studies face massive difficulties.

Wake me up when they do the study about drinking 28 cups per day. That one might be more relevant to my interests.

You might retweak your daily intake when, as I suspect, the definition used as a cuppa is actually 4 ounces, a really small cup. The cup they show is not an 8 ounce cup. The strength of the coffee would also change things. My standard cup/mug is 12 oz and I make it strong, not turkish strong but not Timmies dishwater weak either. I would think then that I drink the equivalent of standard 3 cups of strong coffee a day.
