Hi folks... enough techies here, there might be someone who can help..

I'm looking for software that I can install on an old XP Laptop, that will emulate some sort of a music synthesiser. My son is a budding musician and he wants to experiment with sounds, but he doesn't have a keyboard.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

I know you mentioned win xp, but if you wanted to turn that old box into a linux box. I have a list of 7 synth programs I believe are open source thus free

another benefit of linux, in regards to old hardware
Actually, I just remembered, that old laptop has Linux installed on it! I had forgotten I wiped it and installed Ubuntu.

So, I looked at that link and I assume there are various programs I can download. But my problem is that I don't have the Linux laptop here. Its up in Sudbury.
Can I, in Windows, download the Linux software, burn it to a CD, and then send my son the disk and will his Linux machine be able to read and install it?

I suspect I'm gonna need a linux machine to download it, right? I wish I had kept that old desktop computer I gave away...it would have been ideal for this task.

Any suggestion?

I'm glad it was a good suggestion. As per your questions, the only way to know is to try. I'd have to know what distro your using and what package management program that distro uses. As it stands nowadays, the package management programs are pretty easy to use. Ask someone up there what version of linux is on the box, then take it from there. Someone with more experience/familiarity will take it from here. I use Mint and all you do is go to software management then type in the name of whatever program you want and it's as easy as blowing your nose :D

sorry, I see that you use ubuntu. Should be a piece of cake, it's a very user friendly distro of linux. I think it uses debian apt get, which mint uses as well

Hey enyaw.... thanks for your input...

So to contnue the story... my son cannot bring his Ubuntu laptop down here to Toronto easily, so I need to find a way to download one of these programs to an installable disk that his machine will run.

So, I was think that maybe I can use an Ubuntu boot disk on my Win7 machine. I think I can boot Ubuntu that way, without installing on my computer. Then my next task would be to download one of those synthesizer programs and burn it to a CD. Do you know if this will work? Will I need a linux CD burner software for that to work?

If answering this is a nuisance, please feel free to say so and I'll move my questions over to a techie forum, but I just thought since you seem so informed on the subject...

Thanks

There is, but he has no internet. Shocking I know, but when it comes to computers he's not involved. But give him a guitar or a gun, and he's very skilled.

That's why I'm hoping to be able to send him self-installing CD of one of these synthesizer programs... probably the Bristol.

Hope he doesn't confuse the two.

Tim horton's, McDonalds , Starbucks all have free wifi... Even in Sudbury I would guess...
