TORONTO -- A Mississauga man is fighting to save an outdoor skating rink that is scheduled to be torn down.

Joe Galati has an emotional connection to this outdoor skating rink. When his mother died in 2014, he would come to the Burnhamthorpe outdoor rink because it helped him deal with the devastating loss.

“The only thing that helped me was coming to this rink so I could escape my pain,” he told CTV News Toronto. “I am still emotional about it. I made a lot of good connections here. I learned to play hockey here so I have a lot passion about this rink.”

Galati says his beloved rink located at 1500 Gulleden Drive is scheduled to be torn down this spring.

The City of Mississauga is renovating the Burnhamthorpe Community Centre to meet the needs of the community. Plans include a new indoor pool and expanded fitness centre.

The 53-year-old has started an online petition to save the rink. He has more than 5,500 signatures so far.

Scott Sangster lives in the neighbourhood and has been skating on this rink for years. He signed the petition.

“I think it is great he is doing something to save it. As someone who has been coming here since I was a kid I would hate to see it go,” Sangster said.

The City of Mississauga says the outdoor rink needs to be removed to do the renovation. According to its website, the recommendation to remove the rink was supported by staff.

The rink serves on average 500 visitors per week for four months, the newly expanded areas of the community centre (pool, therapy tank and fitness centre) will serve 6,000 visitors per week year round.

The city says improvements will be made to the current indoor rink at the community centre.

The local councillor in the area told CTV News Toronto a new outdoor rink will be built at the adjacent park on the west side of the property, to ensure residents in this neighbourhood will continue to have somewhere to skate.

Galati told CTV News Toronto he is hoping the city will reconsider and that is why he has started the petition.

The renovation is schedule to begin in April. It is expected to be completed in 2023.

It is an easy choice. They said it straight out. One serves 50 for about 4 months. Not even for this winter.

One will serve 6,000 people yearly.

The numbers are easy. Buddy is being selfish here and needs to let it go. Things change. He has his memories, he made his friends, he is over his mom’s death. Time to move on.

Agreed. I understand where he's coming from, but it's pretty selfish to want to keep it open when there's potential for so much more.

It's not just self though. He brought forth 5500 signatures on a petition (assuming they're all Mississauga taxpayers) who agreed with him. Is there actually 5501or more Mississaugans that want the rink moved?

You can get a bunch of signatures of people who don’t actually use the rink. The amount of signatures is not important really. It is the use of the space.

Plus we don’t know if he told the people what was going to be replacing the rink. They may have had a different opinion if they know what is going there.

This is true. Anybody with a modicum of getting opinions from another understands that the way you ask will influence the answer they give.
My neighborhood association occasionally asks the members how its money should be spent (or not).
I am aware the way the question is asked will influence the answers.

Most of the 5500 people who signed the petition likely don't use the old rink. They likely won't use the new one either.
The old one helped Joe Galati deal with the pain of the loss of his Mother. I hope he finds another heathy way of coping with it again.

I get his attachment and I feel for him and hope the same but that doesn’t mean that others should be held back. He should buy a bench or tree or burial plot where he can go to be with his mother.

My point is, those 5500 don’t really matter if you even agree those people won’t use the rink.

It mattered to Joe and the 5500 people who took the time to put their name into agreement with him.

Ok pumpkin. You’re right. It matters to people who took two seconds to sign a piece of paper when they won’t even use the rink anyway. Those opinions truly matter in the grand scheme of things. Got it.

I agree those 5500 people matter. But not as much as the 6000 people PER WEEK that would use the new facility.

There's a valuable life lesson in this story to learn as early in life as you can. Never place so much reliance of anything highly important in your life into one basket that isn't yours. Own the basket or at least have other options.
Just ask a 74 year old billionaire who was reminded of that last week.
