The soldier who raised the soviet flag over the reichstag building in
Berlin April 30, 1945 has passed away at 85.

Michael Minin joined the red army in 1941 and participated in the whole war,
first around Leningrad and later fighting the long way to Berlin in 1945.

For understandable reasons the extent of the sacrifice of the people of the former U.S.S.R. in WWII has never really been appreciated here in the west.

That said the Red Army's invasion of Germany was exceedingly nasty, not so much on the part of the actual combat troops, who were from "correct nationalities”* and well disciplined, but from the support troops who were neither of these. However, once again, so was the German invasion of the Ukraine and Russia.
