Since my free year of OnStar is expiring in a little over a month, figured it was time to get a GPS device. Really liked OnStar but GM wants over $27/month to keep it after the free yr expires. Being a Linux kinda guy that is just too pricey and unacceptable!

Been looking around. Then saw Best Buy had highly rated Microsoft Streets & Trips 2011 with GPS Locator which normally retails for $70 on sale for $55! WTF! Decided to get it and try it out. Took about 5 minutes to install on my Vista laptop without a problem. GPS Locator had no problem finding needed drivers and GPS satellites. Then all left to do was read the manual and become familiar with this feature loaded program. Streets & Trips does a lot! Much more than OnStar. Spent most of the day playing around with it and am impressed so far. It's pretty darn accurate, has nice voice prompts like OnStar, and much more in the few hours testing it. I can see why a lot of truckers and UPS drivers use it.
So far I'll give it 2 thumbs up!....

No stand alone bracket came with it. So far I drove around with the laptop open while testing it. I will probably be looking into that next.

LMAO!!! WTF, bottie???

Don't know how you come to that delusion???
OH wait! Forgot you are son of JAJA which would explain your waxing JAJAesque....

Anywho.... used it today. Had to go to an Easter dinner in Lockport NY and from there had to travel to my brother's house in Corfu NY. Didn't have a clue on a good route and decided to let M$S&T call the shots. Plugged in the two addys, hit enter and M$S&T did the rest flawlessly picking a nice scenic route taking me right to his doorstep.

Very Pleased with M$S&T with GPS so far

After using it for a month it is feature laden and impressive.
Is very accurate at times using from 4 to 10 GPS navigation satellites for the Pros. Cons are, the computer voice prompt mispronounces some street and route names but OnStar did this also. Also going under bridges causes a momentary loss of satellite signal that returns quickly after emerging back into the open. I imagine this will also occur when moving about in a downtown city with many skyscrapers. Not sure about heavy rain and snow disrupting the signals. Was in some normal rain and all ran normal.

The laptop is a bit big and will probably get a smaller netbook, then load M$S&T on it. Have to give this app a big...:thumb:
IMHO is it better than OnStar that I have used for a year.

The funny thing is most of us do this with our phone without even thinking about it and you're driving around with a laptop on the passenger seat...

I've used Microsoft Streets & Trips for many years now. I found it is the best product like it around and I do have a fancy Garmin which is fine for local day trips but when it comes to a real travel holiday I don't leave home without my Streets & Trips..
We went tripping around Costa Rica which Streets & Trips doesn't have maps for and we really missed the big maps in Streets & Trips.

I have a much older version of S&T on my home computer that I still use very often just to check out where places are and distances from anywhere to anywhere else.
It's a great software.
I should look at getting the current version because mine is so outdated.

I bought a year old version for 10 bucks just to get the USB GPS receiver to use in my boat.

Same here. I had S&T 2005. It was great. Just wanted to see how the GPS version worked and got the 2011 version which is very impressive. 2011 claims to use the 'new and improved' GPS locator/receiver for whatever that means....

As your hero Dubya would mutter....I was doing the Google on the Internets for vehicle laptop mounts and found a site showing DIY plans! Ended up building my own for <$15 with parts from Home Depot.

Long story short, I now have a full featured Toshiba laptop, which BTW is rated better than your Mac laptop, Running Vista, Natty Narwhal, has an excellent GPS better than OnStar, plus has Skype which is a perfect hobby phone.....

The only way I can improve on this is perhaps do all the above with a new $250 netbook for a more compact size....

This goes for $59.99 on iTunes, although I paid $29.99 when it was on sale just after Christmas. Works on your smart phone, provides text to voice, provides pictures of complex interchanges, and maps of all North America with free updates every couple months, and since the map is downloaded it does not use up data other than to locate you. You can also buy a lifetimes worth of live traffic for a $20 one-time fee. So far I have used this, on my iPhone, in Calgary, Victoria, Edmonton, Toronto, and Kansas City. Works great. For $30. And no extra unit to carry around - its on my phone.

That barn job stand from your living room would never fit in a vehicle.....
Isn't that your 13yr old gateway in the background.... and the CB radio on top of the desk (now there is some cheap mobile communication).
