michael phelps becomes the most decorated olympian ever after winning his 19th medal in 3 olympics.
he passed the russian gymnast, larisa latynina, who competed in the 50's and 60's.

does this make him the greatest olympian ever?
hard to imagine this record ever being broken.

If that young chinese swimmer is anything to go by,t hen this record will be broken - she is 16 and the american (Missy...) is 17 so plenty of time for them to continue in 3 or 4 olympics with possibly 5-6 medals per one

Thankfully for him his team gave him a huge lead. He lost about 2 seconds to the 4 second lead in the final leg.

I'll give him credit once they start to creatae evens and give medals for less efficient running styles.

Does anyone of whomever posted above have at least one Olympic medal of ANY kind? Or have you ever participated in an Olympic trials of any kind and made it to the games? Or have you ever tried competing at anything for that matter? Let's just give him a break and accept the fact that he is indeed the greatest olympian ever regardless of what he does or doesn't do in London. He could have very well been retired by now as getting 8 gold medals in one games is an amazing achievement already. Who cares of he collects a few more medals? He has nothing left to prove so it's even surprising that he found motivation to qualify for London.

I don't think you can judge that he is the "greatest Olympian ever" based on the record of medal count. I mean he is in sport that allows him to compete in multiple events. What about some of the greatest marathon runners who only compete in 1 event.

My Argument is for Jesse Owens and Muhammad Ali as the greatest Olympians of all time.

Yes - He is one History's greatest athletes. Very few people can say they dominated their sport for over 12 years like he did..Scary thing is he still has more medals in him
