Nearly half the illegals in this country came here legally.
They then overstayed their visas. Ergo, only half the
problem is resolved when it comes to the Great Divide
- the Wall.
Please provide a source for that, but if it's true that's still 6m!

Pew Hispanic Center - Fact Sheet - May 22, 2006
Modes of Entry for the Unauthorized Migrant Population

http://pewhispanic.org/files/factsheets/19.pdf

"Nearly half of all unauthorized migrants how living in the United
States entered the country legally through a port of entry such
as an airport or a border crossing point where they were subject
to inspection by immigration officials...."[read on]

Reagan's amnisty program went into effect in 1986 [20 years ago].
Six million divided by 20 years = 300,000 per year. Not a small
number, but not significant enough to spend billions in building a
300+ mile fence. Doesn't pass the cost/benefit test.
What does this have to do with Mexico not allowing foreigners to work?

Over one million illegal immigrants were apprehended by the border patrol crossing into the US from Mexico during the past year. A significant number also made it thru. Estimates range from one to two million successfully made it into the US illegally from Mexico. Are these numbers significant enough now? Are these numbers significant enough now to substantially increase border security on the Mexico/US border? The cost of illegal immigration far outwieghs the benefit in both dollar terms and security concerns.

I generally believe that immigration is a net good think economically, both in the immediate term and structurally, regardless of if it's legal or illegal. There are significant costs (healthcare, criminal justice, education) that can't be overlooked to having a massive low skill/education population just walk in. You also can't discount the negative effect on Black unemployment; even pro-immigration economists would tell you that uneducated/skilled blacks are the big losers economically in illegal immigration.

My position is, we should have control of our boarders, we should decide who comes in and we should do this without a 12m gun to our head.
