Cancun, Q.R. — The Secretary of Quintana Roo says they are looking into allegations of a traveler being charged 2,000 pesos for a taxi. Mexico City traveler Luisito “C” says he was charged 2,000 pesos from the Cancun International Airport to the Cancun Hotel Zone, a ride of approximately 20 minutes.
The incident happened over the weekend to a national traveler arriving at Cancun International from Mexico City. At a press conference Monday, State Secretary Cristina Torres said they were looking into the allegations made by Luisito “C”, who referred to the Cancun taxi system as a “mafia”.
Torres explained that taxi fares at the Cancun International Airport are regulated by the federal government. However, at the next meeting with airport authorities and the Ministry of Communication, Infrastructure and Transportation (SICT), she said an investigation will be carried out so that cases like this do not happen again.
“SICT is the one who rules there. However, we have already taken up this complaint to bring it to the table and to continue to make this request for the regularization of taxi service in all airports in Quintana Roo clear.
“We do not have the authority to intervene. We will be there requesting greater transparency and greater control in the application of these rates,” she said Monday.
On social media, Luisito “C” posted “I am impressed by the taxi mafia there. For a 20-minute ride, they charged me 2,000 pesos. In other destinations, that is 100 dollars. This is a mafia and they still ask you to pay in cash. This needs a lot of regulation. This is what a taxi in New York charges from the airport to Manhattan for more than an hour ride.”
He later added that “after stealing 2,000 pesos from you, they still have the nerve to ask for a tip…they are rats!” he said. Luisito “C” also reported that the charging system forces passengers to pay in cash but without issuing any type of receipt for the service.
In August of 2023, a Canadian traveler reported being charged $1,000 USD for a taxi ride between terminals at the Cancun airport. In that instance, the government intervened. The Montreal native had his credit card refunded. The Cancun taxi driver who overcharged was arrested.
Last week, Governor Mara Lezama said the state was working to address known Cancun airport transportation issues, which includes the airport rates being charged to travelers.
