Look at Great West Life who insure a lot of freelancers, although mostly through various trade and professional organizations. It's a big argument for looking around and seeing what associations exist in your field, or for starting one.

Get it as early as possible as you probably won't be healthier later. Don't worry about eyewear and the $10 cost will be better spent on catastrophic coverage for very severe health problems. Most coverage has moderate limits and the catastrophic coverage extends that coverage to higher limits Watch your dental as some coverages only coverage regular basic care and don't cover caps, implants, and veneers, or if they do only the first time.

I should have expanded on Chamber of Commerce. Being self employed I had to get insurance not only for me but employees also. I was told to check out my local Chamber of Commerce. After doing my due diligence,by far they were the most reasonable and it included some life insurance. The good news, with any claims, dental etc there never has been a query..just a cheque.

On the Chamber of Commerce thing. Chambers of Commerce don't actually underwrite policies they just serve as a sales point for what is likely a typical group policy. They are underwritten by a big insurer like Manu, Sun or GWL.

Anyways, each insurer and policy is different. Make sure you check the details on the policy very carefully and know what you are looking for and all those silly terms mean.

You usually won't run into too much trouble on the medical/dental/pharma stuff, but the disability and life stuff may have some bad tasting exclusions or offsets built in.
