Media mogul Ted Rogers dies at 75

zanner69

THE LIVING LEGEND-RETIRED
Ted Rogers, the founder of the communications empire that bears his name, has died at his Toronto home at the age of 75.

The founder of Rogers Communications Inc. was admitted to hospital on Oct. 30 for treatment of an existing heart condition.

A statement from the company's board of directors says Rogers was surrounded by loved ones when he died at his home.

Rogers, who has long been listed as one of Canada's wealthiest people, earlier handed over his corporate duties to Rogers chairman Alan Horn.

Well, he lived a good life and was very successful.

I've not always had joy when dealing with some of the Companies in his group but feel sadness that another icon who truly loved this Country has passed.

My condolences to the Rogers family.

You don't price gouge your fellow citizens for services if you love your country.

You don't block technology advancements for your fellow citizens if you love your country.

I hope this signals a new era for Canada.

Not really. Congrats to Ted for using the Canadian propensity for monopoloy to make himself and his company rich, but he has created more nasty karma than any single businessman in recent Canadian history. His company is probably the most hated in Canadian history.

He could have run a modern company, not created awful negative option billing stunts, held Canadians hostage, etc., and still made zillions.

And to those that say he gave away a lot, of course he did. He should have and he had to in order to keep his monopoly capitalism running strong and unfree.

Ted's lived a good life. No love lost for him or his business. And to those that will chime in and say I'm a hater, I say "more power to him". He worked the Canadian environment like a charm. Too bad his business is a cancer.

Thats your view, I see it differently.

It is perhaps no coincidence at all that we find ourselves on opposite sides of yet another issue.

I agree, I hope this opens new doors for telecommunications companies in Canada.

I have never used Rogers products for many years now and don't plan to anytime soon.

One thing that bugged me about all the outpouring of emotion... I was watching CP24 this morning and they referred to him as "Our beloved founder"... WHAT??? Wasn't the City TV conglomerate and it affiliates founded by Moses Znaimer?
Probably scripted for them.....yes, City TV was founded by Moses and as for what a mogul should be? That'd be Moses...you gotta love a guy that hires hot women by the busload......

As for Ted being a "great" Canadian? A great Canadian Businessman maybe, but not a great Canadian. Sorry, as previously stated, trying to run a Monopoly, fucking your customers at every oppurtunity, and underhanded buisness practices, does not make someone great.

Hopefully the passing of the torch will bring in a new era at Rogers....

Not a bitter twat, but I worked for an American GSM provider and saw first hand what Ted did.

Ever wonder why the old digital north america plans went away and roaming went up to 99 cents a minute? Well, it was not us, our bilateral roaming agreements only charged Ted five cents a minute.

So yeah, grats on gouging Canadians.

Also, who do you think pushed through the majority of protectionist crap at the CRTC and Industry Canada?

I guess, maybe just since he's paid their salaries for the last number of years, but still to give him credit for starting and building the City/ Chum empire is just plain wrong! Moses was probably yelling and screaming at the TV when he heard that!

I heard Ted was an SOB... but that was second hand opinion, so who knows, and you're right about his company's customer service- sucks! BIG TIME!

I guess that's just the Canadian way- God forbid we speak ill of the dead... I say screw it... bury him and move on... Just my nickels worth...

Sorry, but he's a public figure, not my brother or uncle. He also did not die under tragic circumstances or at an early age, so it's fair game to discuss his legacy.

Karma's a bitch. My hatred for his company has almost no bounds. If the Canadian sheep spent some time in Europe and realized how deeply Ted and Bell have ass raped us via monopoly Capitalism, they'd put Ted on a spit and roast him.

But we're polite Canadians, so we're busy saying what a great Canadian Ted is.

Alternatively, I consider Moses Znaimer a great Canadian and a true visionary.

I agree with Mao here: He built his company up and ass raped most of his customers. Unfortunately we don't have that many options else no one would be one and that is thanks to his political game playing. I thought monopolies were illegal in Canada? Not if you're Ted Rogers that is.....

I don't know how old you are but when cable first came to Canada (least Toronto) in the 70's there were all kinds of cable companies. I can name about 6 right off the top of my head. How many are there now? 3? Whose fault is that? Ted Robbers and his CRTC buddies.

Sasha: did you know him personally? Are you in some way affected by his death? Did he have a terrible life of hardship and loss?

Now that mom who died protecting her kids, she deserves my sympathy but good old Ted Robber? I'd spit on his grave.

Well, I admire the man. He made an empire in one generation. We as consumers had every choice not to purchase his products, yet we did regardless of the services or price. Not one of us was forced to use his services; yes we may have been inconvenienced if we did not, but there was not a gun to our heads making the decision for us. We chose to use them because we liked the other options available to us less. It really is that simple. Mr. Rogers was a brilliant business man plain and simple, and he single-handedly built Rogers from the ground up into a multi-billion dollar company. I have the deepest respect for him.

RIP Mr. Rogers

I wonder how this effects the Toronto Blue Jays and spending?

As much as Jim Basile wants to buy a professional hockey team, you know it won't be a baseball team unless he plans on taking over Rogers communications.

But that's unlikely, blackberry is doing just fine.
