I've used McAfee for years. Normally they send an early bird notice/deal that allows you to renew for $10 cheaper. This year they instead offered buy 2 years get the third free. No thanks, I'll pass. I'm not interested in locking myself up with McAfee for 3 years.

Are there alternatives to McAfee? Obviously Norton, but it's the same price. It's gunna cost me around $50 for McAfee but if there's a cheaper alternative, I'm all ears! ;)

I got rid of Nortona few years back as it was just too intrusive.

I switched to NOD32. It updates daily. And is the same price. It's footprint in memory is also about 80% smaller. It's never failed to pick off incoming email with potentials or progam downloads.

Apparently MS uses it for their servers as well. I think it's worth a look.

M2

I also do a quick check with on line scanners every once in a while to see if everythings ok..and nothing has ever some up since I switched to Nod32.

You may have just missed out on some good boxing day deals for Norton and McAffee.

Anyway, I did some research recently and ended up buying ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite for $49.99 and it seems good to me. It's the first time that I've bought a brand name antivirus/firewall suite. CNET.com gives it a better rating than Norton or McAffee. And on the box, it lists 3 awards including CNET's award. All three awards were issued in the summer of 2006.

I picked up my copy of ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite from FutureShop, but you can probably order it from anywhere.

Good Luck.

PS: Norton was hacked in the last half of 2006.

Avast

Give Avast a try, it's free.

Been using it for a few months now and like Avast better.
Used both McAfee, 2 yrs and then Norton, the last 6 yrs.
They are both bloated resource hogs.
Avast leaves a smaller footprint than McAfee or Norton.

IMHO Avast sucks from the way it looks all the way to how it works.

If you're looking for a good and affordable AV then go with Trend Micro's PC-cillin that is a good end user AV which has received numerous awards. You could also use Kaspersky, or one that I liked when I tested it was Bullguard. I liked Bullguard's support above everything else, as I was testing it I called them with several stupid questions to see how promptly they would resolve my problem, anything from how do I get Bullguard to scan my files received through MSN automatically, etc. They resolved all my tests in a matter of seconds, and when I gave them a real challenge they followed through very swiftly. I didn't keep them because they were a bit expensive, but if you don't know about computers then you should give them a shot because they have excellent support. Shit, I got a little winded, that's why I try to keep my comments short. LOL

Avast's interface is annoying.
Norton NEVER.

I don't use an anti-virus at all, but, if I were to get one, NOD32 all the way.

Norton Anitvirus suite was on sale at F/S for $7.99 on boxing day....only problem with Norton is it's a pig on memory and resources.

I used McAfee for years but had some problems with it coflicting with some apps that I had, never did get it worked out so I switched to norton and haven't had any problems over the past year.

Cobster: You surf without any anti-virus? Dude, you're asking for trouble....I can't tell you how many spam emails are loaded with virus' that I get everyday and it only takes ONE to F up your system. There are some out there that will permanantly F up your mobo and there is no fix for them. Surfing without A/V is IMHO like playing russian roulette with an automatic...

Yep I do, I'm doing pretty good and have for awhile.
I don't use outlook for email, my email is online with gmail.
My security settings are great, my firewall is incredible, and I got a couple of other low foot print programs to help along the way that block executables and CAB files.
I'm good. =)
I'm considering an anti-virus because of you for a split second, but not just yet. You bastard guy. :D

Why not use AVG, its free and is highly rated. Then use Zone Alarm free firewall. Both can be downloaded at www.download.com Used both for years and I have never had a problem.

Rogers = Free Norton

If you are on Rogers Highspeed, thier version of Norton is free. As an alternative, if you know someone with Rogers HS and they set up an e-mail account for you, you can download the Roger's version of Norton for free.

It will update via any Internet connection

I hate to break it to you but you can also get virus' from video files, jpg, html, etc. I believe you can also get them from word documents but don't quote me on that....

Just remember: even with online mail services in order for you to view, read, or otherwise use anything in your emails a file has to be downloaded to your pc. Otherwise you wouldn't be able to see it on your monitor....

and yeah, I am a bastard lol

You can, you're right.
That's why some tweaks in my registry are made to disable script-based attacks on and through windows media player and IE.

Another big help is to go to start-control panel - folder options - view tab - and then you uncheck the box that says "hide extensions for known file types".
That way, if you're trying to open a jpeg it'll say "picture.jpg" and not just "picture"....BASTARD GUY. :)

Just about every major webmail provider now runs anti-virus, even the free ones like hotmail.

Having not seen FAGSTER post for a while, I was falsely under the impression he had gotten run over by a car, or worse.....Now I see he's come back to spread his BS.

Keeping in mind that most people do not care to perform the "tweaks" you've made to your system (or claim to have made) and the fact that you advocate it as an alternative to having AV is just preposterous.

Hi Loco, how are you my bitter old douche bag friend?

I made my recommendation, NOD32.
Thanks for your concern on whether or not I run an AntiVirus Loco, appreciated. ;)

My system has been running fine for awhile now.
It's also why I'm contemplating an Apple powerbook, to avoid viruses and what not.
