Materialism

Hammerstein

bored and sleepless again
Little story I saw in the Sun today about a woman you had to be escorted of a Cathay Pacific airplane by ARMED security because she refused to stow her Gucci handbag. Did she raise that much of a fuss that it required armed guards to remove her after all it is only a hand bag.
Apparently other on the flight were applauding when she was being removed.
Crazy ass woman and her precious little bag. What next?

Don't knock it

Materialism is what keeps the world going around. The alternative is Cuba or the old Russia or China. Enjoy.

Its Gucci or Communism? That's a little extreme.

Like everything in life moderation is the Key. I mean its only a bag, and if you are that attached to a physical object, there something missing upstairs.

Both communism and capitalism in its truest form can work. Its the human equation that stop that from being successful without trampling over others..

Moderation?

Ah that's what I was missing, moderation, geez why didn't somebody say something....let me quit my job.....sell my big house...and become moderate.

Do you want to tell the 352 employees that work for me they are out of work because of moderation....

I think most of them prefer to see me striving for that new car, bigger house, nicer vacations and hope my kids choose Harvard instead of UofT so that they keep their paycheques and keep pulling in nice bonus cheques and profit sharing.

Never mind all the people that rely on those 352 people to buy groceries, cars, toys for their kids, etc... It is a vicious cycle but it takes materialism, greed whatever you call it to sit on top and make the world go round. We can't all be moderate, that doesn't work.

No surprise, can't seperate a woman & her Gucci bag. Good promo for Gucci!

Same encounters in Asia while visiting temples, few women refuse to part with their designer shoes when entering temples, they rather forego the temple visit.

If that is what you think moderation means then you don't know what moderation means.

So moderation means shutting down a company. Great I'll take that into my MBA program.

Never mind all the people that rely on those 352 people to buy groceries, cars, toys for their kids, etc... It is a vicious cycle but it takes materialism, greed whatever you call it to sit on top and make the world go round. We can't all be moderate, that doesn't work.
So after all this, all I was trying to say is, do HAVE to get a Gucci bag. Do you HAVE to get a Jag.

Yet some how by me getting an Accord instead of Jag even though I could have, I have to fire 352 poeple, sell my house and send my kids to UofT?

Right, greed it is.

How dare you? Do you know me? No. You don't

I was a highschool drop out, who went on warefare. I worked on the back of truck for 7 years. Worked in some of the shittiest places in this city. I have a few stab marks to prove it.

I busted my ass to grow my skills and manage to get an office job. Worked out of helpdesk, the system, project management. Managed to go to school 8years at night to get my degree.

Moved into management and was able to get a few designation along the way and carve a really good living for myself.

So now that I have the fortune to be able to take an MBA, I have to wait to get in the real world before I can argue your lame support for greed as a positive human trait?

Get into the real world? Pal, I lived the real world and know better than to waste my time and effort on getting a bigger and better red wagon than you.

So take your Pias attitude and give it to someone who actuallys gives a shit.

How dare I? Give me a break

SPQR, you criticise me and take shots at me, but I can not do the same? Lose the double standard. Your background of hard knocks just shows bais for the contempt you show for those that "have" and continue to want to "have" more.

By the way, if you didn't give a shit, you wouldn't keep responding.....

In a very dark place
I LOVE Capitalism. Without the urge of the individual to excell and get ahead we would still be in the dark ages like so much of the world.

Goodtime, I didn't know you were so much into the designer duds

Madeline
Tim Blanks here ;) ...Guess you missed my designer thread...

Execs from MontBlanc & Belair were in town recently to promote as Canadians becoming designer brand conscious.

MontBlanc considering opening another store. If LV or A/X to open store in T.O., more than a few would be in heaven.

...errr, LV has been on Bloor for a long while now. And no to mention it's smaller retail fronts at Holts .

Wouldn't catch Uma Thurman or Sharon Stone in that 'section'.

The limited selection & backdated styles. Same with Yorkdale H.R. Don't get to LV outfit gals, to help you sample & match bags against outfit.

Checkout flagship store Champ Elysees (or the new one in China), aka handbag paradise. I was pumped seeing women in awe, or what that lust?:p

H.R. merely carries tiny subset of inventory & new styles forget it.
...errr, that goes without saying, no ?

They are not meant to be have it all corners, consider they are just part of a store. If you have shopped there, you would know they can basically get what they don't have ( and as long as they can get it )

Or , one can just walk a couple blocks to their main store on Bloor ( not HR, mind you )

Big ass flagships, I really don't know if the market here can justify any yet. I am sure label aficianado won't miss out their flagships outside the country.

Our convenience store owner's wife (Korean) who drives a Chev Malibu sports a real LV bag.
What's the point? They think they are buying exclusivity, but they are really just suckers. If you want to show off fly to Zermatt over Christmas and New Years.

...totally.

It isn't that I don't like / have "nice" things. As I have posted before, my "festishes" tend to run toward watches (not super high end, but better than what most people have), a few bags (Hartman and Tumi) and suits (though I am not in designer labels there...and truth be told haven't dropped any REAL coin on a suit in awhile as I wear them like once every couple months now).

This is the thing - when I pay MORE for something I am getting BETTER....higher quality, better customer service / support.

These bags...some of them are not even leather!! You look at the construction...it is at best acceptable - not even close to being on par with my Tumi or Hartman bags.

My wife tends to go for Furla and Coach...mostly Furla. Fortuately, she doesn't waste her money (because spending my money on this shit isn't even a conversation that is going to happen) on any thing more than $500 or so for a purse. I get the sense that is the approimate price point where the bags quit being "better" and instead are just more expensive. All the same, she defends the practice of purchasing these things - it has led to more than one little snippy (albeit brief) "discussion", as I mocked both the bags and the women who buy them whenver I here her sigh "nice bag" as a woman walks by.

Really - women will do WHATEVER some by tells them when it comes to fashion - from fur boots in the winter, to shoes that literally harm their feet, to those ugly fuckign "crocs", and purses that cost 10 times what they are even REMOTELY worth, simply because someone told them to pay that much.

I mean REALLY...$5000 for a purse that came from the exact same fucking factory as a $500 one...as sold by the same fucking company...with no NO actual hard value of ultilitarin content (no jewels, gold, etc.) which justifies the price difference...nothing more than "we say you pay this much for this bag"....all just so you can say you have one and your GF doesn't??

I guess it is the way the universe balances the stupidity men show for beautiful women...by having them show stupidity for the things men make and sell.
