We should really have our next Terb Party at the Falls... we could have jumping contests. :p

NIAGARA FALLS, Ontario — A man has survived a plunge over Niagara Falls, clinging to a log long enough for a private helicopter to create a current that pushed him to safety, according to reports.

Investigators tell a Buffalo television station, WGRZ, that the victim was semiconscious when he was rescued and was taken to a hospital in Niagara Falls, Canada. His condition was not immediately known.

While investigators were not yet calling the leap a suicide attempt, they say the man did enter the water on his own. Authorities got a call from a witness telling them a man had jumped into the Horseshoe Falls, as the Canadian Falls are known. A short time later, he was seen near the base of the falls, clinging to a log.

A private helicopter from Niagara Falls Helicopter was called in and got within 10 feet of the victim. Wind from the chopper's blades forced enough of a current to push him closer to shore where rescuers could get to him.

The last person known to survive a plunge over the falls was Kirk Jones, a former auto parts salesman from Michigan who climbed down a small embankment and jumped into the Niagara River on Oct. 20, 2003.

Jones said he had been depressed and had been drinking vodka and cola when he went over the famous falls on the Canadian side, a drop of 180 feet.

At least 17 people — not including suicide attempts — are known to have gone over the falls.

Please don't throw stones at a poor, mentally disturbed man. I will bet that your son
does not share your feelings.

If Spankingman's son is like many in such jobs both full time and volunteer, he has mixed feelings. You willingly do what you do to help others, but at the same time when you risk your life or the lives of others are risked because of sheer idiocy. . .

N.F. obviously must have a policy that they will attempt such rescues, however, in many places the policy is that if the risk to the lives of the rescue team rises above a certain level they are not allowed to proceed, particularly is this true of boat crews.

aren't people always going down Niagara Falls in some contraption or the other?

IIRC, there's a museum with exhibits of all the various devices that people made

isn't it illegal to go over the falls? who enforces that?

i would think that with today's technology with polymers and ceramics, it shouldn't be a problem to construct a device to go down the falls with

As I understand it, the chief problem is not surviving the fall per se, it is the fact that stuff that goes over the falls tends to get stuck underwater for a long period of time so you would end up running out of oxygen.

I thought it would be your head smashing against the boulders/rocks at the bottom.
Not when the plunge pool at the foot of the Canadian falls is just about as deep as the falls are high. The American Falls would be another matter.
