Out of sheer boredom and the amount of crap on TV, I've started watching Mad Men. I like it, surprisingly I think I'm hooked. Anyone else enjoy it?

As a child my father was in the Canadian version of that world, well the tail end of it anyway. I am surprised that people today "get it" and understand the nuances, ie: everyone smoking anytime anywhere, the kid running around with the plastic bag over their head and getting in shit for taking the clothes out not for having the bag over her head etc.

I always thought that joke from Playboy summed up the demise of that time circa 1970.

"It used to be if you wanted a bottle and a broad all you had to do was open your door and yell out... 'send in a bottle and a broad.' Those were the good old days... now you have to fill out a fucking form!"

I was given the 1st season on DVD as birthday present....since I don't watch the Olympics in protest, and Coronation Street is prempted till after the Games are over, I've been giving this a try.

It's no Sopranos or Dexter, but it's getting better. I'm on episode five.

Don Draper has got serious shit goin' on in his life....

Ah another one who is not watching the Olympics in protest.

It is no Dexter, (I've always felt Sopranos was over-rated), but it is interesting. I think America and the critics are in love with the concept and the apparent 'perfect world'.

Yes....I've not watched any TV coverage (but I've seen a few highlights on Yahoo) in protest, and I'm trying to avoid purchasing any products from any of the sponsers (Macdonalds, Coke, Petro Canada, etc). I've read a few newspaper articles that mostly deal with dissenting opinions on the Olympics, and I've tried to discourage "the sheep" on another board I frequent from watching as well.

Good luck with that....unless it affects their own pathetic little lives, they're not about to let a few human rights violations get in the way of their pleasure. BTW....they're Americans.....not much is being said about the winner of the 100 metres....but Michael Phelps is GOD....:p

Great show.

I started watching it last season by fluke and now I never miss it.

All the characters are all fucked up in one way or another - none of them are likeable, which makes it so real now doesn't it.

Don has serious issues:

1. The brother that he denied (probably the hardest to watch)
2. The upbringing and subsequent secret life.
3. Emotionally crippled, yet needy (needs the GF - wants her to run away with him to Paris - he's willing to run away from his kids, needs to bang the Jewish woman whose father owns the dept. store - Rachel I think)
4. When it's his kid's birthday and he goes out to pick up the cake and doesn't come home till the next day.

But Don is intelligent, and confident in many other ways and quick on his feet with the words.

I get the biggest kick out of Don's boss - the guy who's banging the head secretary and is half a lush, then makes a pass at Don's wife, has a heart attack, then tells his wife that he loves her. Man, that's only too real.

Peggy is a fucked up woman, she's never happy, is very defensive, a touch paranoid even.

The sexism is everywhere, the smoking is constant, the drinking in the office, it's great TV.

Apparently the two lead stars are real life husband and wife, which makes it kind of interesting. I have seen a few epsiodes and thought it was interesting. Not hooked yet, but it well received. I guess, I remember a lot from those days and find it kind of boring. The nostalgia is interesting.

Yeah, but I keep thinking, "Boy that Joan is hot, but if she were alive today, she'd be in her early 80's"

Great show...some of us remember those days and can really relate.

The clothes are great too. Fedoras looked a lot better than the backwards turned baseball caps.

If there had been a TERB in those days, most of those guys would have been TERBites.

I discovered it about...two months ago? A&E was running all the 2nd season episodes on one day...I caught the commercial, and when they said "Emmy award winning show", i was like "what is this?". Recorded them all ont he PVR, thinking I'd maybe watch one for grins...spent a saturday watching every damn one...have been hooked since.

The redhead...oh my fucking stars and garters...She gives me a boner every time I see her...my SO is a Redhead, and I like my woman "curvy"...and the SO is more the (slightly) buff and bony type (thanks to all the "I hate my ex" dieting and working out she does...)

If you have Rogers On Demand, you can find it also on channel 100 under the Free TV heading, in case you miss an episode.

Season 1 is showing on Bravo.
