Nichelle Nichols, Lt. Uhura on ‘Star Trek,’ has died at 89

Nichelle Nichols, who gained fame as communications officer Lt. Uhura on the original “Star Trek” television series, has died at the age of 89.

Her son Kyle Johnson said Nichols died Saturday in Silver City, New Mexico.

“Last night, my mother, Nichelle Nichols, succumbed to natural causes and passed away. Her light however, like the ancient galaxies now being seen for the first time, will remain for us and future generations to enjoy, learn from, and draw inspiration,” Johnson wrote on her official Facebook page Sunday. “Hers was a life well lived and as such a model for us all.”

Her role in the 1966-69 series as Lt. Uhura earned Nichols a lifelong position of honor with the series’ rabid fans, known as Trekkers and Trekkies. It also earned her accolades for breaking stereotypes that had limited Black women to acting roles as servants and included an interracial onscreen kiss with co-star William Shatner that was unheard of at the time.

She often recalled how the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. was a fan of the show and praised her role and personally encouraged her to stay with the series.

Like other original cast members, Nichols also appeared in six big-screen spinoffs starting in 1979 with “Star Trek: The Motion Picture” and frequented “Star Trek” fan conventions. She also served for many years as a NASA recruiter, helping bring minorities and women into the astronaut corps.

More recently, she had a recurring role on television’s “Heroes,” playing the great-aunt of a young boy with mystical powers.

Interesting fact.....

Her brother was one of the weirdos that committed suicide as part of the mass suicide Heavens Gate cult.

Man I'm feeling old looking at that.

I met William Shatner once when I was a kid. He was making commercials in Toronto and my mom worked for the company that made them. She knew I was a huge Star Trek fan and arranged for me to visit her one day when he'd be there. Sadly, he turned out to be not a particularly friendly man and he treated a kid who idolized Captain Kirk and just wanted to say hello as nothing more than an irritant. Which I may have been - but still, I've met other high profile people (actors, politicians, etc.) and most of them still give you a bit of time to make you feel as if they care that you're there and wanting to meet them.

It's too bad that aside from Shatner, Leonard Nimoy and DeForest Kelley the rest of the cast was often just window dressing and didn't get a lot to do. Most of what Nichelle Nicholls got to do was say "Hailing frequencies open, Captain." That could have been a great and truly ensemble cast if they had highlighted some of the others from time to time..
Aside from Nimoy, the rest of the cast couldn't stand him.

Even Nimoy had a falling out with Shatner in the final years of his (Nimoy's) life and the two never spoke again for the last 7 or 8 years of Nimoy's life. Pretty sad when you think about it, to be so unaware of the people around you having feelings. There's a pretty good summary here.

Shatner recently did an interview on CBC's radio program Q in which he confessed to being lonely and scared about his age. It was surprising actually.

And now to Nichelle Nichols. I was very sad to hear that she had passed away. I used to watch TOS Star Trek faithfully as a kid in reruns after school. Nichelle Nichols may not have had a lot of scenes, but the ones she did, she used to form a very memorable character. She had a huge amount of presence on the show and more so in the movies. After Trek she also went on to act as a spokesperson for NASA to attract both women and people of colour into NASA. There is a doc on HBO about this aspect of her life and it's a great watch.

I'm sure in there somewhere in the various links is that awesome story she tells of wanting to quit after the first year on the show, but happened to meet Martin Luther King at some function, who turned out was a trekkie. She mentioned to him she was going to quit, and he told her straight up she could not quit. He told her she was the only black woman on the telly back then who was in a position of authority, as all others on tv were always portrayed as maids, cooks, and servants, etc. Thus she was too important to the community, too much of an icon/role model to go away. Thank goodness she stayed. A real trailblazer. Strong, smart, driven, beautiful - my goodness. (So much bigger and more important than my little fantasies).
Rest in peace.

She said in an interview that I saw from British TV that Shatner changed from being a guy they all liked to being aloof and not friendly with the rest of the cast after the first season. She said she still loved him but he could be a real ''dork'' at times.

She had a four octave singing voice as well.

I'm glad she listened to Dr. King.......She made an impact on the small screen. She's leaving a memorable legacy.

Rest easy.
